Tom,
Have you got a race report for us? Would a tire warmer have helped? PS. Any idea what makes Streilnieks and Matteucci so fast? Is DP supposed to be faster than FP now?? |
Here's the write up I posted to our local mail list:
Kind of a sloppy start to the season for me and FP... Knowing John Thomas was running had me only worried about him. I was a little too confident that I didn't have to worry about the others in the class. Others in the class were Jay Jackson, the event master... Richard Holden - Co driving with JT and John Anderson (the class elder at about 70+ years) and his new co driver this year, Donny something. Jay must have pissed off the National staff because FP were the first cars out (after a few FJ karts). It was probably 40-45 degrees at start time with class heats of 60ish, so getting ANY warmth in the tires was near impossible. Kind of like Greg mentioned it wasn't easy to keep up with the preliminary results. As best as I could tell I was pretty solidly in 2nd after 2 runs on Saturday. I looked for results but couldn't find them. I improved slightly on my third run so I figured all was the same... After a while I learned that Jay had busted off a great last run and was about 1/10th off of JT. ( I was about 1 second back...) Finally during second heat I finally asked someone where the times were posted. Turns out they were INSIDE the impound trailer, out of the wind. Thats when I found out Donny had snuck in under me on his last run putting me in 4th. That was pretty much the end of my cockiness... On Sunday I wasn't going to let myself get beat by some guy named Donny somebody. To try and offset the cold I warmed up the car in the trailer and then sealed it up tight with a propane heater going full blast. Then I waited until the last minutes to get to grid and wrapped the car. After each run I had the tire insulators on with the wrap around that. I was trying to retain every calorie of heat I could. The gods smiled on my efforts and broke Jay's steering rack on his second run and kept Donny from fully waking up. I told Steve to watch my last run on Sunday because it was either going to be really fast or really ugly. About half way through the run I paid homage to Greg and drove right past his "Gates of Despair". At least I knew it when I did it and tried to swerve left to at least hit the cones and get a +3 rather than a DNF! In the end I managed to leap frog back into 2nd. John Thomas' car was making it's competitive maiden voyage and had a lot of teething issues. On Saturday his camber plates all came loose and were wayoff from where the should have been. He also found he had about 1/2" of total toe out. He seemed to be working on that car all weekend. In spite of it all he spanked us by 2 seconds. I don't think his car has anything on mine other than a really good nut behind the wheel! He'll be a lot faster as he works out the bugs and when we are running in a warmer time and place. Also as a side note, Brian Matteucci was running in our 1st heat in DSP and turned times that only Erik Strelnieks and a couple of open wheeled Mod cars could beat in the last heat. If you're in DSP in the Houston Tour, you better bring your A game or just plan on cheating! Tom |
As additional info to the message below and to respond to the specific questions I'm posting this as a ZDriver.com exclusive!
Donnie Bartalone, as someone mentioned, is co driving with John Anderson this year. John is a great guy and is getting into his 70's now. His car is a well sorted, well built car with a Rebello engine. For the last few years has been recruiting younger guys to drive the car at National events to help showcase his car and to hopefully get them hooked on running in our class. Michael Tews drove it well the last couple of years in Topeka, along with Lukas Anderson (John's son) and others. Donnie drove the car for the first time this past weekend and did REALLY well. This was also his first event of the season so he was learning a new car AND shaking off the cobwebs. I'll be watching out for him in Kansas this year. SS, DSP and DP are all SUPPOSED to be slower than FP, but we forgot to tell thos guys that this weekend. Erik Strelnieks (SS) is undeniably one of premier autocrossers in the country and is always a threat to beat FP (being from my local region, he often does beat FP!) One of the biggest contributors to SS and DP beating us this weekend was they were both in the last heat when the temps had climbed to nearly pleasant. As I mentioned in my previous post it was cold and we were the first cars in our heat. So not only were the tires hard, the course was dirty for our first runs. Brian Matteucci was running DSP in the first heat with us. He was running the Kumho 710s and from what I hear that is probably the best cold weather tire out right now. He's also a very good driver who has been developing that car to a level that many never imagined. Watch for that car to get bumped to a higher class next year. Finally, for next weeks Houston Tour, Rick Martninez and Travis Rouse are a couple of Austin guys who are co driving Ricks car this year. Rick built the car a few years ago and then took some time off to recover financially. So far Travis has been turning the better times. The car has what would be a pretty good street motor. I think it's got flat top pistons, a hot cam and is still running SUs. They got FTD at a race in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago, so they are getting quicker! I'll keep an eye on them as well. Tom,
Thanks for the report !!! He was running the Kumho 710s and from what I hear that is probably the best cold weather tire out right now Brian Matteucci was running DSP in the first heat with us. He's also a very good driver who has been developing that car to a level that many never imagined. Watch for that car to get bumped to a higher class next year. I think you will see the Evo's being bumped faster then that from ESP after the results the Evo RS threw down in California the past two events . Donnie drove the car for the first time this past weekend and did REALLY well. This was also his first event of the season so he was learning a new car AND shaking off the cobwebs. I'll be watching out for him in Kansas this year. Tom, I was totally shocked to see all of you Z guys at one Event . Wonder how many of you will end up in Houston. Mike |
>I was totally shocked to see all of you Z guys at one Event . Wonder how many of you will end
> up in Houston That wasn't coincidental... knowing that sight was pretty central, I sent a message to most of the FP guys east of the rockies and tried to pick a fight! ;) Houston isn't looking nearly as good. I'll be surprised if we have more than 2 or three cars... Some people in San Antonio are talking about needing new tires... Wah.... :) |
I know what you mean. Those San Antonio people need to suck it up and quit whining. I hate whining.
I dunno. Let me see if I can whip up a batch of my fabulous 20 minute combination facial peel/tire softener tonight and see if it is gonna be worth the $72 entry plus $150 gas + $150 hotel, etc ... I'll decide maņana. I still think the best case scenario is me=holt+4 or me=martinez+2. |
I'm registered. Are you happy now?
|
:) :D :p :)
umm yes! |
