Hey guys. For my senior project in High School I am building a 300ZX TT race car. I am planning on competing in SCCA events. I have met some people who can supply me with a fiber glass body, and tubed wheel sections and such. Any ideas how to get started? Peace foo's

First thing to do is get a SCCA rule book for the event our going to run in. Without that in hand you would be wasting your time on any mods you would be doing. The TT doesn't have many places it can run in SCCA .

Thanks Mike, that thought had previously occured to me. I was think a nice VQ30DE? Or maybe a VK57DE? Do you have any idea where I could grab one of these from? Peace foo's

Before you start it would be a good idea to buy a rule book. That will tell you every thing you need to know. You'll be able to answer every question on your own instantly instead of posting here and waiting for a reply.

I hate to be the first one to say it, but I cant see your experience level being real high. That might be a little too much car. I know I wouldn't have faired too well. If anything, an IT car would be best, and obtainable. They're fairly quick and a good starting point. Some people have had luck with the 1st gen 300ZX in that class.
There was a guy in Green Bay, who was a vice principle or something, which ran an IT 240. It was dubbed the "detention hall demons".
The thing with SCCA is there really isn't any class with high horsepower turbo cars. Even the GT2 group is NA, which is for fiberglass body tube frame cars. I highly doubt a high school project could come up with the capital to run in that class.

You can sign up for SCCA's Speed Freak program . It is geared toward younger
enthusiasts and they give you a reduced
Membership rate.
Have you guys thought of running a shifter cart and or a FSAE car ? Both can be had for a reasonable price and spares are much cheaper. Plus they are both much faster then a full bodied race car. If your . You can also build a FSAE car in your autoshop , and most Colleges have a FSAE program, so if you want to continue on later you can.
If you are interested in the road race program than look for a Formula 500
they are fairly inexpensive to run .
BTW ... Most regions have an ITE or SPO class , so you can run turbocharged cars, but plan on spending at least 10K for safety equipment and wheels and tires in that class.
You can find tons of the VQ motors in wrecking yards , but it will be awhile before the 5.7 liter will be cheap enough to pick up for swaps.

No track experience at all. I was thinking of starting with an R32 GTS-T Skyline, with a JDM VQ30DE. Good base. I wonder if that would go against any rules? (For those of you who dont know, I sell Skylines for Night Szevyn Racing, so a Skyline is no big deal for me to pick up, and for this case, I could get an R32 shell for $250, and a Y33 VQ Clip for under a g. It would average out to about $2,500 all in all to have both of 'em over here) Plus if I were going to be racing this thing, my boss would sponsor me, no problem. So im working on the details. eeeeeeeeee... The thought of someone younger than me with a car far more powerful doing something far more dangerous to more people makes me shudder.
Do you have any track experience? Have you taken any of the tests to get your licenses yet? Have you taken a glance at a rule book yet to see what is required?

Yea I was speaking with my boss about the project, he has decided to help me out quite a bit... Very much so. This is what were working out.

Yea thats funny Pylon_Boy, he said the same thing "Bro most of these guys start out with a 240Z or a Z31 300ZX... And your riding out there in your Skyline, do you really want your first skyline to hit a wall at 120mph?" Hate to say it but he and you guys are deffinately right. But its worth looking into. I think it's part of his "uniqueness". I mentioned something similar to him a while back, but I think we're stuck with "Peace Foo's". Oh well, it could be worse.

Hey All,
Since Nismo is going to build a Skyline and not a Z car then we won't be seeing him post on our racing boards any longer . I am glad he has the motivation to build a car that won't be legal in more then a few outlaw type classes, since the Skylines were not imported to the US then SCCA doesn't recognize them in anything other then modified classes . Plus our friend will be spending the next two or so years on work detail and novice school . Have to remember they just don't had out those racing liceneses

You know, I have this feeling that you may have received your last bit of info on SCCA events. I don't think they're as tolerant of the whole Foo's thing. Not that I blame them.
