280A vs 280B trans boxes

Hey Guys ,
I was checking out Johns failed tranny post and was wondering what your
preferences on the 5 speed boxes are ?

Here is the link to the Zgarages tranny ratios .

IMHO if you're running anything higher than a 3:55 rear end, you're best off with the B trans. Also, I may be way off base here, but I beleive the B trans has a better shift fork design with bronze friction areas.

I had a 280B box in mine (the one that blew) with 1 4.44 R190 LSD. Previously I had a 4 speed with a R180 4.11 VLSD. Even with the bad inside wheel speen on the 4.11 VLSD, I actually got quite a bit slower after the switch to the R190 LSD because of the 4.44 ratio, so I switched to the 5 speed b box and got quicker. 5th is too high in the 81-83 box to be of much use though. It turned out not to pull very strongly @ about 140 MPH and was just a place to shift after you hit 8K-8.5K RPM in 4th.

Hey Mike,
Try this site http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ You can pick the setup you want and see the top speed in all gears. For autocross I just look at where 2nd gear runs out. Depending on your power output the ideal trans will get you to about 65 in 2nd which will be allow you drive most courses without shifting. If you're down on power you might want to look for lower speed in 2nd to allow you take advantage of your shorter power band.

Thanks Tom,
I played with all kinds of combos Pretty interesting how
mixing tire sizes. trannies, and rear gear ratios are similar
when mixed up a bit.
