Sounds like you'd be better off running a whole new wire for power to the radio from the battery or fuse box.
That is a strange problem. I've seen a radio that only turns on with the lights but not the other way around.
The only other thing i can think of is too disconnect the illumination wire as it seems to overload the radio.
Also, describe "goes out." Does that mean the sound goes out or the radio completely turns off?
If it's only the sound, it might be that the illumination wire is hooked up to the cellular mute wire on the radio. Some of the higher end radios have those now.
