Sounds like you'd be better off running a whole new wire for power to the radio from the battery or fuse box.
That is a strange problem. I've seen a radio that only turns on with the lights but not the other way around.
The only other thing i can think of is too disconnect the illumination wire as it seems to overload the radio.
Also, describe "goes out." Does that mean the sound goes out or the radio completely turns off?
If it's only the sound, it might be that the illumination wire is hooked up to the cellular mute wire on the radio. Some of the higher end radios have those now.

I had a similar problem with my factory stereo. It would work fine for awhile with the lights on, but then it would just quit. Replaced the stereo and the problem went away.

The radio was grounded to a live head light wire. The guy who did this car is a tool box.

Tool Box.

That's hilarious. I was getting tired of using 'power tool'. Tool Box will work great.

Didnt even think about checking where the ground wire went to. And since it wasnt my car, I only cared half as much. But it's taken care of now.
