Strange Noises From Below

Ok guys I have another question for u to check your guys knowledge. On my '92 N/A slick top, the car makes a funny noise that I have yet to figure out. It isnt anything major (I hope) but I am just curious if u guys may have heard it to, or know what it is.
When I drive the car on COLD mornings, after a efw seconds of driving at low speed/ low revs. A noise, not quite a roar but higher in pitch comes from the center console. If i push the shifter harder forward or backwards (depending on the gear) it quites the noise or changes its frequnecy. The frequency of the noise also changes if i accelerate, and completly stops if i but my foot on the clutch. I m not sure what to make of it, but i am beginning to think it may be something internal.

Maby needs a new clutch, should'nt be anything huge. Get underneath it and make sure if any fluids are leaking and what not. When it's cold metal tends to shrink, I know this because on really cold days and nights when I try to lock the Z sometimes it doesnot want to coaperate and it pisses me off. Like how cold are you talking about?

It's a throw-out bearing. Mine did the same thing. Change it when you need to change your clutch. It's really nothing to worry about. I think mine did it for 20k before I changed it.

The throw out bearing wouldn't cause grinding from the clutch of gearbox. That would be caused primarily by your clutch, or possibly slave cylinder.

It's funny what we Georgia boys call cold! Ha. I had a very strange noise pop up when we had that 25degree day coming from the tranny. Figgered out my tranny don't like to be cold.

Make sure it's full of fluid. When I was leaking out that bad rear seal I eventually got a veritable cacophony of noises from my tranny. Fixed the seal and filled her up, and she when quiet.

Is the noise affected by anything else besides mashing the gear selector around? Do you have short shift kit installed? If so the bolt that holds the bushing on the bottom of the unit may need to be tighted - I had that probably to. (Frankly that is the direction I would lean. If you can drop the H-pipe and the drive shaft it's a cinch. Otherwise you need to remove the center console and prepare for a Mission Impossible-style decent, a la working on an EGR.)

You also may be in the market for another clutch... but try the easy stuff first.

Keep us posted.
