steering problem
hello all, i'm not very mechanically inclined but decided to ask the question here because i've taken my 1990 300zx to a couple of mechanics and have not been given any straight answers..
when i'm driving i'll turn the steering wheel right or left and the response is not immediate. there seems to be 10-30% that i'll turn it before it actually starts to turn.. i have seen two mechanics who have put it on a rack and say that everything looks ok.. clearly it's not. i've read through the posts here and noticed what was said about using regular power steering fluid. i am guilty of that out of my own ignorance. any advice would be appreciated. thanks! |
worn steering rack bushings.

thanks
don't supposed you have a pic showing where those are.. i haven't received my manuals yet.. what should i look for? i'm not very mechanical but want to be able to speak somewhat intelligently with a mechanic...

by the way...
am i screwed because i've been using regular power steering fluid? read some posts about this.. is there a chance that my problem is due to this? if so, how do i resolve it?
|
i also seem to have this problem with my 90 n/a 2+2 ! so i should replace the steering rack bushings? and what kind of power steering fluid should i use? how do you flush/drain power steering fluid?
|
Rizz, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been using Dextron III ATF. I think the manual calls for Dextron ATF and I think the III is compatable with any type of ATF, but your NOT supposed to use power steering fluid in the steering or the HICAS.

dextron III is fine.
to flush the system you should remove the return hose to the resevoir while running the engine to idle. The return hose should be feeding some container to dispose of the old fluid. when empty, reconnect the return line. fill to appropriate level with new ATF fluid.1 1/8 QT NA, 1 3/4 QT for TT with HICAS=1.3 Liter NA, 2.0 Liter TT. http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi online manual steering system section page 14 diagrahm of steering rack, bushings shown |
