Smoking Z
Guys, I just bought a 90 TT with 60,000, although I believe the meter was turned back a few. Anyways, I'm seeing blue color smoke coming out of the exhaust. When the car is cold it's not there, but as the car gets warmer it starts to come out and it's not too much until I press the gas. I've asked a mechanic in Strauss and he told me (without checking anything) that the Piston rings or head must be leaking oil and that oil is burning in the fuel chambers. He told me it's not a problem but I'll be losing oil continously unless I get it fixed. Anyone else ever faced this sort of problem, Please reply. Ne help is greatly appreciated.
Thanx.

Try holding a paper towel about 6 inches away from the exhaust, and you can collect the blue exhaust junk on the towel. Its easy to sniff it and see if its gas or oil, or a mix of both. Good low-cost diagnostic tool, just don't burn yourself! Good luck

Yes, after holding it close to the exhaust for a few moment, I try my best to smell and Identify the scent. It smelled like Oil(that's a guess from the best of my ability). If it is Oil, than do you have any idea what could be the cause of it. Could it be just Oil burning which is supposedly not dangerous but is something that needs to be taken a good care of or is it a bigger problem that must be dealt with right away.
Please advise if you can.

Well, if you only sense oil, that's a good sign. If you sense antifreeze it suggests head gaskets, and oil plus water (that makes a horrible sort of white junk) isn't very promissing, either. If it is JUST oil, and you still have reasonable power, then I'd normally look at things like PCV valves or similar, that might cause excessive oil in the exhaust.
If everything else looks right, then its probably piston rings starting to get sloppy. I've run a lot of high-mileage (250k mile and over) daily-driver cars that fall into this category, including Datsuns and even Bimmers, with Walmart Syntec half-and-half --- they use up a bottle a month, but seem to keep on ticking. Just keep an eye on anything getting dramatically and suddenly worse! Good luck with it . . . Bob

Re: Smoking Z
I need to ask another question. I've this car for about three weeks. I haven't driven it more than a mile or so, since the insurance is not done yet. The smoke smells like Oil and it seems to be increasing as the days are passing by when I'm turning it on. when I bought the car and test drove it, it must of been on for more than 10 minutes, but I didn't see any smoke, even when I pushed it to 5 or 6000 rpms. Could it be that the smoke is just increasing becasue it's not been driven and the oil might have to be changed. One more thing, is it odd that I'm getting more smoke coming out of the left exhaust when idling and little or nothing from the right, but reved hard, both are smoking almost the same. Sorry for asking some repetetive questions, but in this case, before I take it to the mechanic I want to have an exact idea what could be causing it, and only way I can get it is from people who also own the same car, so the mechanic can't try to rip me off or do a wrong job.
Any help is always appreciated.
