Comparing oil to gas is like comparing apples to oranges. Mineral oils do not lubricate or perform as well as synthetics do. And it is well worth buying better oil. However, Nissan says use 91 octane in the Z. Why wouldn't they just say use 93? it's becuase they know you don't have to and they have developed the engine for 91 octane. 93 is more expensive where I live, so why waste you money on 93 when you will not see a performance benefit from it, knowing that the Z will perform just as well on 91 stock?

lol, now I'm done arguing with you; that statement shows you really don't know anything about cars and I'm just wasting my time. Synthetic does NOT lubricate any better than conventional. This is from the thread where we actually discussed the value of synthetic...

The real advantage of Synthetic Oil over Conventional Oil is that it takes longer to break down... So while it might take 4 months for Conventional Oil to break down and become non-functional under normal driving conditions, it might take Synthetic Oil 6 or 7 months to break down to a point where it's non-functional under the same driving conditions... (those numbers are guesses, but either way, both oils will last 3 months or longer, and the Synthetic Oil will last a little longer than Conventional.)

...but guess what? You're supposed to change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles anyway, so the real advantage of synthetic is lost as long as you change your oil as frequently as you should. If you don't change it every 3 months or 3000 miles, then I'd go Synthetic as it'll protect your engine longer than Conventional. But I'd really suggest changing your oil as often as suggested.

In terms of viscosity, 10W30 (or any other weight) Conventional Oil is the exact same as 10W30 (or other same weight) Synthetic Oil, so they'll both protect equally well over the 3 months/3000 miles that you drive with it.
LOL, just stop posting answers and start posting questions to things you don't understand, because you're really not contributing to the forum when you're making statements like that.

I don't know anything about cars? Ok. Go look up the tests that BMW did with Mobil 1 in Germany, and then get back to me. If you think longer time until breakdown is the only advantage to synthetic oil then I think you need to do a little more reading. Try reading this for instance http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/15378/ That's a tech article from Car Craft magazine. You want to argue with that too? I'm contributing way more than your ego is.

Wow, I'm not trying to stir things up, but that was a great article. Gotta give Nismo points for that one. I still think it's funny to be comparing oil to gas, but that's all on you guys. I think there is a clear distinction and that the benefits of synthetic oil go way beyond simply how long they last until breaking down. These benefits are well documented and proven time and again by industry leaders. This was a silly argument indeed. As for the octane thing... I have to give a little nod to the "Why didn't Nissan recommend 93?" question. The reality is, that they recommend "Premium" knowing that octane points vary from state to state. If 93 was the standard for premium, it would probably say "93" rather than "premium" in the recommendation. I think the point was to tell you to run the best quality and highest standard gasoline that was available. I don't think there's any arguing that point.

Good point Rod. Is premium only 93 by you? How much does your premium cost these days?

No, our premium is 91 and it's about $2.70-$2.80 a gallon right now.
