Need more power
I just recently sold my 95 Mustang Cobra and purchased a 90 300zxtt. I am looking to get some more power out of it and am wondering which order to do it in. I was looking at superchips web site and they claim that with an aftermarket chip with no other mods you will get you a 350 horse z. That sounds a little far fetched to me. Would you recommend a chip first or another approach. I am trying to get to around the 365-385 hp range. What can I expect for expenses. I am trying to do it on a budget. (As if you haven't heard that one before).
Any help is appreciated.

Okay,
First off welcome to a real sports car!
The first thing I would do is make sure the maintenance is up to par before doing anything. You may want to do a leakdown check on the cylinders before deciding if you want to modify the car first, as if you are getting a lot of leakage you may want to do other things first.
Now, you also want to pressure test your system, basically since you have a car that is now 11 years old, you need to make sure there are no boost leaks, boost leaks are a killer..
Once you have everything taken care of these are a few of the steps you can take to get around 350rwhp..
- Intake (100$)
- Exhaust (700-1400$)
- Clutch (400/500)
- Chip (500)
- Gutted Precats (Free)
Those will get you going in the right direction, the intake will add about 15/20hp as the stock system is really restricitve, the same with the exhaust.
You are going to need to replace the clutch as soon as you go to the next stage, it won't last a week so you might do it before you do the chip. When you have the tranny out go ahead and replace your O2 sensors, and gut the precats while you are at it.
The chip is a little confusing, all the chip does is remap your fuel curve to dump more fuel into the system so you can turn up the amount of boost you can run on the stock turbos. You can turn up the boost to about 14psi which will be one hell of a run ride. You can add an electronic boost controller for 300$, it's worth the money.
So here's your costs:
- 500 (tuneup and misc stuff)
- 100 (Intake JWT Intake)
- 700 (Exhaust HKS Turbo)
- 500 (clutch, replace yourself)
- 500 (chip)
- 350 (boost controller)
- free (gutted precats)
You are at about 2500$ right there.. that's not too bad for a 350rwhp car...
