intermittent clutch problems

i searched all over for a thread about this, but nothing seemed applicable to my problem. i've had the car for about 3 days (1990 5-speed N/A). on the way home after the most recent of many very enjoyable and reliable somewhat long trips, my clutch decides not to disengage. maybe engage. ive never been too good with those terms applying to a clutch. but i it wouldnt separate the enginge from the tranny. i couldnt shift and i got very little movement or pressure from the pedal, and it wouldnt come all the way up. i pulled off and remembered that i had read that the return springs gave problems. so i pulled up on the pedeal and instantly the problem was solved. it just doesn't seem hydrolic to me. any ideas?
