Idle

Ok stupid question. Where is the Idle adjust? I was thinking on the throttle control rod (my terminology), on the right side. Am I close?

It sits on the back of the plenum, on the driver's side. The adjustment screw points towards the brake master cylinder.

Are you having a problem with a high idle?

More of a low idle. When the car's warmed up and just sitting, the rpms are below 1000, which is lower than a friend's with a 91TT and every once in a while it'll dip lower and the car almost dies.

fsm says:

manual trans n/a & tt 700 +/-50 rpm
auto trans in neutral n/a 770 +/-50 rpm TT 750 +/-50 rpm

if it wants to die at idle, check for vaccum leaks, bad electrical connections, and then there's the cleaning of the t/b's and the iacv, just to start..........

Sounds electrical....fun stuff. Does it want to do it more when it's hot or cold? Does it want to do it when you turn on any accessories (AC, fan, lights, stereo, etc.)? If so, then it could be one of the components to the IACV that has a bad connection. I wouldn't mess with the idle screw since it's intermitent.

It's only when its warm. I haven't really tested electrical components. My stereo's always on but it's a cheapy little thing I doubt it's that much of a draw. I'm sure the install is totally screwed though. How would an electrical component cause the engine to die unless my alternator wasn't working?

Is it normal that whenit's cold out my car runs at about 900-1100 idle but in normal temperatures it runs at a normal 700..

it is if the idle goes down after the car has warmed up for a while
unlike my last car that went up to 2k when it was running...wow i have a lot of stories about that car

Everything on these cars is controlled electronically. Could be a bad connection, or a bad sensor. Try cleaning the throttle bodies, like CC mentioned. That's an easy place to start. If that doesn't work, then I'd focus on the IACV. In my mind I use the following equation.... intermittent problem = electrical problem. You may want to look into a grounding net also. That could help.
