grinding tranny noise please help
help help help
i just got a 91 Z NA 5spd
first problem:
shifting in and out of 2nd gear produces a somewhat quite grinding noise. Its not the gears themselves, cause it shifts in FAIRLY smoothly. Someone said it may be the syncro's.....please keep in mind i consider myself very auto knowledgable, but manual trannys and differentials are not my fortei. Anyway....do u guys think it is the syncro's....as i drive do i make it worse? how hard to fix/replace?
Second Problem:
when i take my foot of the gas and im in gear, it makes a od clanging noise of somekind. I think it is comming from the differntial..i have no idea though. Someone said U joints, but i dont think so

Ouch,
How many miles are on it, more than likely it's the synchro's or could be a really bad throwout bearing..
You are going to have to take it apart to know for sure, and that does sound like the uv joints, you are just going to have to get it up on a rack and take it down.
Beware, the tranny is a pain to get down, you have to pull the exhaust, all the way up the the downpipes..

if i get teh car on a lift how long do you think it owuld take to replace the synchros? do you think if i change the fluid and put lucas treatement in there it could fix itself? how much do you think these cost......I really appreciate the help
Well You wont really know whats untill you take it apart. One thing that you can do if you have a lift that you can use is to flush the trany out. When you drain the the fluid put some cheese cloth over the pan to catch the metal so you can see what color the flakes are. this will give you a better idea as to what parts are bad. the syncros should be made out of a yellowish brass color. The gears are silver in color.
