Electric cooling fans

Z My Dust brought this up in another thread and I thought it would be a good question in it's own thread, so I stole it.....

Are electric cooling fans better than the factory cooling fan with the fan clutch? If so, why? Who makes a good electric fan? How easy/difficult is it to install? How much $?

i guess that makes this thread 3 about the fans. i had a thread going about this. i think my fan clutch has kicked it, and i need to replace it. just sound like my cooling fan is workin reeeeal hard. anywho... i called over to my local parts store, and when i asked if they had the fan clutch in stock, he didnt even answer me at first, he just said, "just switch it over to the electric fan" he priced them between 88-100 dollars, or something like that, and then like another 40 or something for the kit to convert it from the current version fan in our cars, to the electric model fan. the fan clutch is 80.

The thing that I don't know is if there is a real benefit of going with an electric fan over the stock one. Most people that work at local auto parts stores don't know about our cars. They know domestics, along with Civics and that's about it.

No, the stock fan moves more air than even two of the largest fitting electric fans. If you have any cooling problems at all, stick with the stock.

Cool. Literally. Stay with stock and save $. Why do some people switch?

Maybe the coolness factor comes into play again, I dunno.
Some ppl think that maybe removing the stock fan frees up some ponies. I personally don't think so.

The electric fans do free up some ponys, only a dyno could say for sure what the gain in HP is, but is it worth the risk of putting more heat on a already over heated engine. Most conversions that I've seen also include a upgraded radiator. So that might off set the lack of efficieny of the electric fan. Thats just my 1-1/2 pennies.

That's propbably how many ponies it frees up also. It probably would look better. I have the Z1 radiator, so I really don't have a problem with overheating. Maybe if the fan I have breaks completely, then I'd consider it.

If he's looking for h.p., he should get rid of the fan and water pump. Using an electric water pumps frees up around 5+ h.p. That's roughly $60/h.p. not including new fans.

Would love to see who makes an electric water pump for the Zeds... Doubt it. But I would buy one.

As for the electric fans... I think the engine bay would look MUCH cleaner without the radiator shroud and fan clumping up everything.

So you can actual look down and see your brand new UR Racing pulleys

That's so true, especially with the large radiator. Our mail man is a car freak. This guy was in the Navy and spent some time in Japan. Said he got to drive a Skyline a couple years ago when he was on shore leave. Anyways,...I was showing him the engine compartment on my Z and told him I had the UR underdrive pulleys. He just kinda looked at me like..."yea, sure you do." It's so friggin' tight in there. When I installed the new radiator I had to shave the lower fan shroud so that the AC compressor wouldn't hit it. It would look much better. Anybody have pictures of an electric fan setup?

I drag raced a 62 corvett in the early 80's and we ran an electric motor on the water pump, it had a belt like our timing belts only not as wide. The motor was only about 2 or 3 inches in diameter and 6 inches long. It spun the water pump pretty quick. I believe it could be done.

Ah yes, much cleaner. That's interesting how he routed the plumbing to the water pump housing. Makes sense with how the radiator is set up. I've seen the preliminary designs on the single plenum. That'll be sweet. I'll be in line to buy it also. So, a cooling fan like that would run somewhere in the ballpark of $100?

Click on the icon -- POST REPLY -- then scroll down and clik on icon -- MANAGE ATTACHMENTS -- click on BROWSE -- then open up picture in you computer -- then click icon UPLOAD -- wait for picture to upload then close out that window -- then click icon SUBMIT REPLY.

If you have a picture from a webb site, click on icon INSERT IMAGE (it looks like a mountian in a yellow box) then type webb site in opened up window at top left of screen.

Adds for electric water pumps in summit catalog state 11-20 h.p. gain. That's for small block chevys/fords. I'm sure it less for a 3 liter, but still substantial. Roughly 5% of a 300 h.p. motor.

I have another project.

Another company that does an electric water pump conversion is a shop here in Georgia called Beckman Racing and Customs. They are another specialty Zed shop who prepares race cars and fast street cars.
