E85 Single Turbo NA
Ok, I'm helping my friend Turbo his z32. I have a lot of experience with e85, tuning, and turboing. I know everybody says that you can't turbo a vg30de.... but on e85, higher compression ratios can be turbo'd as e85 is upwards of 109octane, has ~30% less thermal efficiency than 91 thus burns slower and cooler, allowing for more timing, boost, and compression. Although e85 requires ~30% more fuel to achieve the same a/f ratio, because it is colder and slower to burn, leaner AFR's can be safely had (e85 make most power, in my experience, at 12.0:1 afr.). ANDbecause there is more fuel going into the cylinders, there is more exhaust volume coming out......allowing larger exhaust housing turbos to spool quicker. SO....with that said, this is what we're putting together:
Stock vg30de longblock ARP headstuds ARP rod bolts upgraded valvespings 1000cc PTE injectors Custom manifolds single Holset HX52 turbocharger dual 38mm wastegates Ebay Intercooler and piping that is the basis of the build. We'll be getting pics up and shyt in a few days of the car. :s-chainsaw: :fenforcer: |

here is how it rests now. timing belt tension bolt snapped and took some valves along with it:

When it's all said and done, you'll have spent more and made less power than a twin turbo swap. Enjoy reinventing the wheel. |

Didn't know that vg30dett's came 600bhp out of the box.....guess I learn something new everyday. Ok, so your saying getting a vg30dett for 2k, twin gt28's for 3k, THEN still buy injectors, studs, clutch and intercooler is cheaper than the N/a engine (um.....free buddy), hx52 ($400), then about 2k in misc items. Wow.... which ever school you went to that taught you about mathematics needs to send ya your money back..... :023:
...Glad I'm not related to you :075: |
Anyone else want to tell us how its not possible, not practical, not reasonable, or not to your liking?

its been abused, but we're bringing it back to life....
here is the beast behind the boost: Attachment 18800 |
for engine management, we are most likely going Megasquirt. Maybe AEM (full standalone or just FIC)
|
Lmao.

If this actually works I'll be amazed. Not sure weather to say good luck or to laugh like ZLover did.
Theres a reason Nissan put 2 turbos on the 300ZX-TT |

Theres a reason Nissan put 2 turbos on the 300ZX-TT Just....please.....google "e85", "high compression turbo", and anything else that you cant wrap you head around before you come and criticize our build sheet. :006: |
here is a single turbo vg30de in a silvia...... wait!!! they cant do that!!! that is impossible!!!! everyone laugh!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAS-TR4hR3k
|
Never said it was impossible. Just really impractical.
And I googled E85 and it took me to a honduh forum.... got some specs handy for it? BTW I have to ask, Is that a wood screw holding your wing on? |
ok, just do some research on e85........ yea thats a wood screw. Like I said before, it has been abused.

This whole build makes me question his intelligence. (like the whole e85 statement. "it burns slower because it's cooler") Do you even understand the chemical composition and thermodynamic properties of E85? |

I meat to say burns slower and cooler. I have been using/tuning with e85 for over 3 years. I love it when people who dont understand a concept automatically discredit it. :082:
Call greg dupree at specialty-z and ask him his opinion on boosting the vg30de, He'll give you a better explanation over the phone then I can on the internet. |
Damn this is a T.O.F. thread for sure. I love how the new guy tells everybody that actually knows what they are doing they are wrong WOW!!! oh and really a volvo turbo? what are the specs on that thing? and i like the tail alot you should sell it to me.

I question more the ability of an NA motor since they just aren't that strong, more so than the other things you are doing. TO single turbo a car with dual throttle boddies seems to be contradictory but hey go for it, the REALLL thing on my mind is does your friend have ANY TASTE at all? holy hell is that car hideaous. steering wheel is crap, the seats are crap and that two tone paint of vinyl is hoooorrid.

I said it was abused....you guys must not be able to read as well. the Specs on the hx52 we are using is 66/71/11. It flows close to a 42r. Well, all you guys talk about is that it isn't possible, so I figured (correctly) that none of you have ANY experience turboing an N/A motor.....just opinions and "he said, she said".

The plans for the part list so far:
ARP head bolts @95lbs ARP rod bolts @48lbs Tomei valvesprings/retainers 1000cc side feeds on factory rails Adjustable 1:1 reg (going to keep the IDC's close to 80% by keeping pressure down to let the pumps flow more) Dual intank Walbro 255's Custom exhaust manifolds ACT 6puck stage 3 clutch HX52 (~15psi) dual 38mm wastegates Ebay 1-in-1 out FMIC Nistune (most likely) AEM uego Tial BOV Manual boost controller Hoping for 550whp on e85. Luckily my buddy owns a machine shop with a dyno so I'll be able to fine tune it on the dyno. Been doing a lot of just email datalog tuning on AEM FIC's recently and need to get back on the dyno. Turboing an N/A is very cost effective when (in this case) you spend 2k and only gain ~80hp to start off with when doing a TT swap....THEN you still have to buy TWO different turbos in order to get anywhere near the CFM's that this $400 turbo can achieve..... and then eveything else. I've turbo'd many stock bottom end N/a engines (mostly MAF-based as well) with success on e85. As the rods in the vg30de are the same rods that are in the vg30dett, attaining 550whp wont be too difficult and streetability will be retained. |
