diff replacement

ok, so the whine from my diff is becoming unbearable. time to replace that sucker as soon as i find a replacement for a decent price. i have the FSM, and it looks to be a no brainer, but is there anything i should know about that isnt covered in there. i dont want surprises. and anything else i shoud do while i am down there?? depending on funds, i was thinking of replacing the diff bushings with ES bushings, and possibly the driveshaft with a one piece.

If you don't have subframe spacers, you might as well get them and do them when you're putting everything back together. Similarly, if your subframe bushings are original (or haven't been replaced in a long time), I'd recommend getting the Energy Suspension repalcements. I have to replace mine once weather gets nicer - when they go bad, the subframe starts wobbling and making a lot of noise.

As a general rule of thumb, if you're going to have suspension parts removed, bushings are always a good thing to replace (unless they're new).

VLSD's can;t be rebuilt, he only has 2 options

A) cheap replacement
B) Upgrade

Just go with B and get a Nismo, Kaaz, or TOmei 2 way. diferential.

And where might this information come from? Of all of these differentials that exist on this planet, I find that very hard to believe.

right now im banned form the forum that I got this info from (i got in an argument with a mod, I won, he got mad and abnned me for a month how mature) pretty much is on how Viscus Diferentials are made. its not the same as a clutch type diferential. but ehhh no time to really erxplain now I'll get you full details later

I'm pretty sure the guys that are installing the new Leader Gears and all, are doing a freshening on the diff. I highly doubt they're putting new gears in with old bearings, shims & seals.

The whine is generally a bearing going bad, or something changed to where the gear teeth aren't engaging at correct pitch line anymore. The vlsd part of the diff may not be rebuildable, but the most common failures are bearings and grears ..... ring & pinion that is.

yeah, this might not be doable for you if your not up for shipping but here

for 1150 you can have a brand new carbonetics carbon lsd 1 way,1.5 way, 2 way. It comes with all new inner and outer races and new oil seals and stuff to refresh you beat up diff. also Z1 sells good used diffs low miles for 350 I think I bought one and i still have it its in good shape and works great!

hoov100 Mar 7, 2007 05:39 PM

hell, he could buy a better used diff off ebay for less then $200

MikeZ Mar 7, 2007 07:38 PM

I have a whine as well coming from the rear of my 95' Z. I've heard it for the last 15,000 or so. Is this the same thing? It's not really loud, but it is definetly audible.

entropy31 Mar 7, 2007 09:10 PM

carbon lsd??? no thanks. why would i blow $1150 on crap i dont need?? my car is a rice free zone. a used stock one in decent shape will suit me and my wallet just fine.

My friend in Yelm might still have a turbo diff if you're desparate. I know its geared taller but... its out of a low mile Twin Turbo, RHD! :)

To put turbo diff in a N/A Z is lot of cuting and welding to make the place where the old bolts used to go to new spots for the bushings and bolts. also you would need to change out the axles for turbo axles because there 6 bolt, and also a new driveshaft because of the cv joint,(n/a is 4 bolt)

Bleach Mar 8, 2007 03:21 PM

oh, I did not know that. I had heard of people putting the 4.0 geared NA diffs into the TT all the time. I didnt know they had to change stuff.

Aren't they both R230 units?

entropy31 Mar 8, 2007 05:58 PM

i'll put the carbon lsd in right after i finish with my hydro power install ;).

Wrong...... it's a straight across swap. The tt and n/a sub-frames are interchangeable.

I will enlighten your responce

basically when people put the N?A rear end on their TT's they literally mean the rear end. they swap, Subframes, diffs, axles, and most of the suspension. (still can;t name all the suspension components exactly) they also do this to help the HICAS elimination cimpletly.

but to swap a diff on a N/A to TT you have to cut and weld maybe some one should carify what there talking about b4 they open there mouths up its a f***ing kiddy game on this site. im right. i wasnt talking about a sibframe swap i was talking differntials only. the reason being is because bleach said his buddy has a tt diff so i said what was needed to be done to put a tt diff in a N/A subframe!!!

o.k. ...... don't get so defensive. :fenforcer:

my bad but every one needs to clairifly what they say for now on. because every one turns stuff around and makes every body sound wrong yes if I said i couldnt swap a tt SUBFRAME in to the N/a you would be 100% right your right but bleach was only talking about the differntial so every body comes on an starts thinknig we are talking about the hole subframe and not ask " hey are you guys talkin about just swaping the diff or the hole subframe?" no 1 asked. but heres a good question for yah. ok can you swap a tt subframe in a N/a 2+2? i will have to say no on that one. so techicaly speaking if u said n/a and didnt say how many seats you could have bin wrong to. but in the same sence right beucase no one clarified that.

b300z Mar 10, 2007 07:44 AM

i dont think the subframe is any bigger in the 2+2
