Offered a Z32

I've been offered a nice 300zx Twin Turbo for not a bad price.
The only thing that jumped out at me is the year.It being a 1996 Model.
I've heard rumours and read some saying that the 1996 model dropped down to 280bhp cause of emissions. Is this true?

Also was this only done in the states or was it every single 300zx no matter where it went? Reason I ask is cause I live in South Africa and they wern't so strict regarding emissions.

Also if it was dropped to 280bhp how much does it affect the car in real terms? is it noticeable in its 0-60 times etc?

Thanks

beez

the reason the '96 was different was for the US's OBDII emissions regs. thats part of the reason it was the last year they sent them here. they continued to make them in japan till '99. i guess if there is an OBDII plug, it is probably the slightly less powerful z. anybody with a '96 know where that is so he can check?

I would say you ought to add a few mods and get the 96. 20hp is not something you will notice much and it is easily recovered.

nissan built the car so that it wouldn't be noticable. Here's some more info about it, the topic focus more on the A/T but it talks abuot the 96's in and their lack of variable valve timing and stuff.

Depends on how far you want to go with the car, stand alone engine management systems will be required I do believe, due to the ODBCII restrictions.

They may have gotten around that by now though, not 100% sure.
