New Guy needs help!!
New Guy needs help!!
Hey, im new here, im 16 and i need some help! I got my 90 NA Z about a month ago, buying it knowing it needed a little bit of work. I was just wondering if maybe yall could help me out if yall had anything similar to my problems. First thing is that there is a slow reaction when you accelerate, it takes a second for the car to respond. And sometimes you hear the engine rev-up before you start to actually move, im not talking like a really long time, just like a split second. Also sometimes whenever i break or decelerate, i here and feel this knock coming from the back of the car. Also when sometimes when i start the car, i here this loud screeching noise, not cool, buy im pretty sure thats the power steering, cause i have a small leak, and from what i can tell it only does that when im low on power steering fluid. And the last thing i can think of is that it seems like the transmission is staying in first gear for way to long ( i have an auto). So if any of yall have had anything similar to this and possibly know what its about, that would be awesome!! thanks, hope to be talkin to yall soon
1st off, welcome to the site. 2nd thing is please become familiar with Rizzspeed's link page. https://www.zdriver.com/showthread.php?t=8434. Most of what I know about Z's has come from hands on experience and that link page.
It sounds like you could have about a million different things that could be causing your problems.
The hesitation you're describing can be many things. PCV valves, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, bad connections to the injectors and/or coil packs. If it were me who just purchased the car, I'd replace the air filters (or upgrade to a POP charger), fuel filter, PCV valves/hoses and spark plugs. Have someone check out your tranny. You could have some problems there. It shouldn't rev before moving forward. How high does it rev before it shifts out of 2nd. The harder you are on the gas, the higher the car will rev before it shifts. I'm not a big fan of the auto tranny on these cars. They're problematic and very expensive to fix.
The clunking from the rear end can bebrake, drivetrain or suspension related. Check your brake pads. If they're worn, then replace them. Check your shocks. If the shock tube/cylinder is wet, then the your shocks are shot and should be replaced. You could have bushings that are wearing out, like your diff bushings. You may want to take the car to a place that specializes in suspension and have them look it over.
The screeching could be your belts. Check them for wear and replace them if necessary. If they don't look worn, then you may just need to tighten them.

Looks to me like you inherited someone else's problems,DallasZ.
Definitely get the Transmission checked out. The automatic in the Z's are quite problematic and have been known to go bad relatively quickly.
I also see a possible 60K maintainence in your future.
I put together the Link Page for persons such as yourself that are in need of repair and parts information. Place in your 'Favorites', cuz it sounds to me like you'll be visiting it quite often.
