New to forum, and Nissans.

I just picked up a 96' 300ZX Twin Turbo 5spd #265 of 300. 86K on her Impeccable interior. Previous owner had all service completed @ 60k. Picked her up for $11K.

She has a Stillen Intake, Stillen lightweight pulleys, and as you'll see Momo wheels (not sure what type though)

Any opinions on first mod. Was thinking 1) BOV's (I want that sound desperately) Is it true the car will run rich without a tune with BOV's. 2) Full exhaust and downpipe, possibly Cat-Delete.

Glad to have found what seems like an excellent forum.

Tim

welcome to the forum. nice looking TT there. in case you were curious, #265 of 300 refers to the last 300 z32s sold in the US. nothing special about them other than the little badge. just so you know, replacing the stock recirc valves with BOVs will do nothing other than give you that silly PSSSSSHHHHTTT sound. in fact, until you get to fairly high HP levels, the stock recircs are arguably better for your car than aftermarket BOVs.

If you get the BOVs

get the ones that have the "tunable" sound cuase Saturday nights hanging out with the friends, it sounds cool, driving to a funeral it sounds quite inappropriate.

As far as mods... Boost controller, an ECU upgrade and exhaust, with those three things you'll get a lot of bang for the buck. Probably give you another 60-80hp on pump gas with only a few pounds of boost over stock.

Put a HD radio in there cause you are going to driving around a lot enjoy!!

Also, there is a nut under the handle of your e-brake, you should tighten that down a little so your handle doesn't move up so much, (make sure it doesn't make your parking brake rub when disingauged), the reason doing this is so you don't stretch out the boot.

And finally from the picture it appears that you are on your second airbag or perhaps second steering wheel, run a report on the VIN see if its been in an accident. Looks like a really good car Tim.

I'll have the report run @ my work, forgot to to it when I bought it. Yeah I noticed the parking brake goes up ridiculously high I'll check out that nut.

I've seen the tunable but it seemed more like it lets the air out either quickly or slowly (i assume the slower the quieter)

How much would an ECU upgrade run me. (you me a tune or buying a chipped one?)

As well as a boost controller I want to get a turbo timer because this thing has been well taken care of (had 60K in 02, fast forward to middle of 08' 86K)

I know wanting that PSSSSSHHHHTTT sound is silly but I love it!

congrats on the purchase. thats pretty cheap for a 96. hopefully it wasnt in a wreck.

search for/check ashspec or jwt for an ecu.

also, seriously look into some jspec taillights.

make sure to pay close attention when buying parts, especially things like the ECU. the '96 is OBD II, and does not have the variable cam timing. there are quite a few parts out there that have a specific '96 part number, or just plain won't work on the '96.

I got an auto check and its clear. The previous owner was #2 and purchased it in 98'. I told my friend it didn't have the variable valve timing but he insisted it had it because of somethig in front of the valve covers. I didn't feel like arguing. I'll be sure to watch out for the parts.

I dont see how the 96's have the same power ratings as the 90-95's Mine should have less horsepower. Did Nissan tune the 96's diffrently?

The exhaust timing is more aggressive to make up for the lack of VTC. Rumors were that the 96 Z32 actually only had 280bhp, but it has never been proven. All 96TT's that have dynoed have been in the same general range as 90-95TT's. But trust us, you do not have VTC unless a 90-95 engine and ECU was swapped into your car.

Oh I have no doubt, shame though seems like such a waste to get rid of it for the last year.

they did it to meet the new OBD II emissions requirements that went into effect in '96. I'm sure they would have kept it if they could have.
