Gauge Cluster Question
Gauge Cluster Question
From what I understand, the gauge cluster for a 90-91 is different from a 92-96. I can see the difference.. but can anyone tell me which one is which?
I've looked everywhere I can think of for a straight forward answer to this- I've even tried to find clusters for sale just so I can get an answer, but people just post 90-96 gauge cluster for sale, and never say what they pulled it off of.
Thanks for the help in advance!

No, no.. sorry.. I guess I wasn't clear enough.. I don't want the metric system or anything like that.. Forget about the actual gauges.. I'm just concerned with the housing itself. If you look down at the bottom of the gauge cluster- where the gauge would sit on top of the steering column- the first one is kind of arched and the second one is square. I just need to know which one is the 90-91 style and which one is the 92-96 style.
Just realized, there might only be a difference between the TT and NA gauge clusters. TT's got a boost gauge between the tach and speedometer. I think I see the boost gauge in the rightmost picture, but I could just be trying too hard to see something there.
That's exactly what I replied to you about. In the (now leftmost) picture, the center section is lower thus leaving enough room for the boost gauge between the tach and speedometer. Is there a boost gauge in that particular cluster? I can't really tell but on this new day it doesn't look like there is one there, which completely screws up the theory from my previous post.
ohhhh.. ok I see what you mean. No, both clusters are from na's. I guess it was a year change thing.
Here's the issue. Yesterday, I was detailing the Z and the plastic "screen" on the cluster cracked. I guess 23 year old plastic can be expected to do that. "No big deal.. just buy one from another Z that's the same year as yours," you might say.. well... here's the best part.. it's not the original cluster- and I think I recall the guy who sold me the Z saying he replaced the cluster from a buddy's car that was a different year than the one that I currently own. So, as I'm sure you can imagine... this has become quite the little nightmare. hahaha

Ah. Ok well, can't you just.. see which yours looks more like? If it fit before, even if it's the "wrong" one it should fit again. If you want to actually find one that's supposed to be for your car (year-wise) then I guess you'll just have to dig deep and be patient. Pray too, if you're into that.
Hey Rupe do you know off hand if there would be a problem with putting a non turbo 180mph cluster in my car with a cluster that only reads 160mph? I want better gauge faces than what I can for the 160mph in my car, I just don't know if it will bolt right in with no speed adjustment or mounting problems.
I honestly don't know, but I imagine there'd at least be some speed adjustment needed. If you have the clusters handy and have the time, you could always try it out. Drive in gear X at Y rpm, note the speed, change up the clusters (right there you'll know if you'll have mounting problems :P), then drive again at X/Y and see if the speedometer reads the right speed.

Right yea thats why I ask i have been looking to get one for 180mph because I can find many more and much better gauge faces for them but was not sure if it would work. How do you adjust the speed if need be on the cluster itself or can it not be done? anyone know?
