auto-x

i have my first auto-x coming up next month. the articles from the club suggest 40psi in all tires for competing.... that sounds terrible to me. it sounds like it's going to accelerate the already inevitable wear. is this really necessary? would 36 or so do? i mean, i'm sure they know pretty well, but it's definitely something i'd like a second opinion on before i do it.

You don't want your tire to de-bead around turns. Their 40psi suggestion (I'm assuming) is for tall walled all season tires. You should be fine in the high 30's... so yeah I'd say 36 or so should be fine. It just really sucks to have the tire come off during the race. Especially if you don't have easy access to spares.

EDIT: During rallycross, I run the volvo's snow tires (in the front) at 40psi. They don't have a strong enough sidewall and they are a tall tire. My actual rally tires in the back I run around 33 because they can handle it.

ok that sounds reasonable. the Z32 tires are not very tall, so i'm hoping they'll be ok around 36-37. they really suggest using chalk to verify how much of the tire is touching the pavement.

remember they will heat up as the day progresses and the pavement heats up, increasing the PSI. keep a constant check before and after every run.
