90 tt + 95 n/a both w/ bad rod/poss main bearings..

okay so first of all im new to the site. I first got a 95 2+2 n/a w/ 150k+ miles, ran great when i got it, then i got a 90 tt w/ 87k miles w/ a bad rod bearing with the intention to rebuild or swap. only problem is since i got the tt my n/a developed the same problem. is this common for this engine? since i got the cars i now have a kid on the way so money is going to be tight but at the very least im keeping the tt. i did some research and found that doing rod bearings in this engine is alot more complicated than i originally thought. i.e. have to either support the engine from the top and take out the crade/move the tranny back to get in thru the oil pan, or remove the engine and strip it from the top.... is it worth this kind of work? or should i just save up and get a jdm engine? i do work in a shop and have access to a lift. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
