I'm assuming this problem is caused by front rotors in need of a turn but I could be wrong. Here's what's happening: When I hit the brakes above about 50mph my steering wheel begins to shake, this occurs about 85% of the time. It also varies in severity, sometimes it's a slight vibration and other times its fairly severe left-right shaking. This problem doesn't seem to affect brake function or performance. I'm wondering if I simply need to turn or replace my rotors or if I have a much more serious problem.

If it is present ONLY when you apply the brakes, there's a good chance you've got slightly warped rotors. Take them to a machine shop and see if you can have them turned. Most rotors you can have turned at least once. Turning is quite a bit cheaper than replacing if it's possible. The shop will look them over and tell you if they can. I would take them to a machine shop that doesn't also sell rotors.
