DIY FE alignment

i've found several articles about simple methods to align your front end at home without any special tools. they all explain it with confidence, and make it sound very do-able. so, from the perspective of other average at-home mechanics, how well can this DIY alignment work out? will i be lucky to get a decent result? or will a good few hours of tedious work be able to get me a shop quality alignment?

anyone that can point me in the direction of their favorite alignment write up, please do. like i said, i've found plenty, but each is a little different.

my buddy did it once, then got a real alignment, he was in the outer limits of all the specs, but still within the limits. its no where near perfect, but its better than driving with no alignment done if you know you need one

that's cool. i guess i'll probably try it and if it doesn't feel perfect, i'll be ready to have a real one done. i'm just planning for when i do my tie rod ends.
