Rocker Cover Problem (among others)...

I noticed ever since I got my car that there is a large build up of oil sludge right below my rocker arm cover and everywhere around the edge. Every spot in my driveway has a small oil spot. I was assuming it was a bad seal so i removed the cover and used The Right Stuff gasket maker to seal it up. I put an adequate amount on and let it settle over night even though it says it only takes a minute to dry. I started the car this morning and it was idling rough. I removed the oil cap and it was intermittently shooting out puffs of white smoke. I just got back from driving for only about 3 miles and I noticed smoke around much of the cover. I found a pair of seals on eBay for around $10 and was wondering if I should go ahead and get these. The previous owner of my car, who ever it was, didn't perform any maintenance. My car has smelt like it was burning oil since day one. Any input about anything in general is always welcome. I appreciate all the help you guys have given thus far. Thanks, Chris.

Get the proper gaskets and have fun cleaning that liquid gasket out of the covers. Consider all the extra work a lesson learned for not doing it right the first time. I don't know if that will solve your problem but it's a step in the right direction.

Yeah, I'd use silicone before I used that ****. It would've been a lot easier to scrape off, and would never have leaked, as long as you cleaned everything well enough. The problem with silicone is, it can seal them on there so well, you may have one hell of a time getting them off again.
