my first advise with a poorly running z is always to check all the connections. they corrode and prevent components from working. so take off every plug, clean it, re-crimp it (what i mean is make it grab the pin harder), and put it back on with dialectic grease. after that's done, it's likely to be running better. if not, post back, and there are tests you can do on your components.

though, before all this, i should ask if you've checked the engine's essentials like oil pressure, compression, and oil level. don't try to do anything if it doesn't have enough oil pressure.

are you going by the gauge in the car? are you sure it's not the sending unit? you'll either need to hook it up to a mechanical gauge or get a new sending unit to find out. mechanical gauge would give a better answer.
