1987 Fuel Guage problem

Has anyone had a problem with the fuel guage like this? The guage works when the tank is full, than after driving 60 miles or so( maybe a 1/4 tank) the guage drops to empty. I just got this car last night and do not know if the sub guage works or not. I do have a wiring dia. and it does not show that there's much to it.

Just thought I'd ask if anyone has any idea's before I pull the tank. I hoping it's a bad ground or wire???

Thanks

Chris

Common problem. Replace the fuel level sending unit. You don't need to pull the tank. You just lift up the rear carpet and the pad.

Mine has that problem too, on a digital dash.
At about half a tank, the quage says empty, then when it hits the 5 gal. mark the sub guage works just fine.
I just got used to it, freaked me out the first day I had it though. Flew to San Diego to buy it and then drove it home to Phoenix.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if there's a after market sensor for it?

I guess I'll find out if the sub gauge works. Hope I'm not walking, maybe I'll put a 1 gal. can in the back when it should be close to running out.

Thanks again,

Sure there is. If you want to add an aftermarket gauge.

fuel guage

AZ is correct, but Digital dash takes a different kind, same location. What you can do is Take yours out disconnect, take appart and clean it with a solvent(Nail Polish Remover). The fuel over the years creates a form of grime and does not allow the float contact to read correctly. You will understand once you remove the unit to clean. good luck
