speedo and overdrive not working on Z31
hi im new to this so not sure how it works but looking for advice. I'm looking at buying a 1988 auto Z31 but the speedo doesnt work. The current owner says when the speedo works the over drive will work is that correct? The car drives as it should and the box changes up and down with ease. If i buy the car ill need to drive it home some 250 miles will this be an issue with the over drive not working?

You could write several books with what I don't know about AT in a Z31.

Not sure if you mean 5th gear or Cruise Control when you say "over drive." I'm thinking about my grandfather's 1956 Buick right now. If you mean Cruise Control, you can drive fine without it. If you mean 5th gear, you should be able to drive in any gear your transmission will switch to and stay in. 3rd or 4th gear should work fine on the road if you stay to the right and let people pass. I would avoid higher RPMs (4000-6000?) in order to be as gentle with your 29-year old motor as your can be, at least until you have brought it back to your own "satisfactorily reconditioned" point where it can handle higher RPMs again. Your main crank seal, for example, is probably just looking for a reason to stop sealing at this point. It's just plain tired. It can shred itself at high RPMs. Mucho lubricating oil on the road when that happens. I think the 88s are beautiful to look at - and they were built to run forever.. Keep in mind that you are also buying 29 years of previous owners' maintenance, good, bad and non-existent. Behind all of that, there is still a great Z waiting for you to find and appreciate. Congratulations - and good luck!
