right head light problem,HELP
My 1986 300ZX has a head light problem that I can't seem to fix. Need help. When I place the head light switch ON, the lights open up but SOMETIMES the low beam is out. Hi beam OK. I can some times hit the hi beam switch on and off and the low beam comes back on. Sometimes operating the head light switch on and off cures the problem. Smetimes when just driving down the road all of a sudden the low beam goes off and then maybe 15 minutes later it will come back on. The bulb has been changed to new. It may be a bad relay? All comments appreciated
The contacts in the switch are dirty and corroided. It may need to come off and be bench cleaned or replaced, but first try this...
Go get a small can of "CRC" electric contact cleaner and a can of WD-40.
Loosen the steering column covers (no need to completely remove) so that you can access the headlamp switch. Put an old towel in the floorboard (you're gonna' make a mess) under the column. Now use the straw to flood the switch from every angle and every openning you can with the contact cleaner. Work the switch through all positions again and again. Really pour the cleaner into the switch (use the entire can).
Now, do a light check. Working? If so, squirt some WD-40 into the switch to replace the factory lube you just washed out and reattach the column covers. You're done.
Not working? Refer to 1st paragraph... Good luck.
