can the ca18det engine be swapped into the z31, since the s12 and z31 used the same engine for a short time?

hoov100 08-15-2007 09:47 AM

z31 never had the CA

You want to replace a 3.0L motor with a smaller 1.8L? Uh... why? If you are doing it for better gas mileage, get a honduh. :D

Bleach 08-15-2007 10:47 AM

Of course it can be swapped in. There is room. Its not a bolt-in swap if that's what you're wondering. Hardly any engine swap is.

The 200SX and Z31 did have the VG30 for a while. The US 200SX had the CA18et, not the CA18DET...

If you're going for power, swapin a VG30eT. If you want gas milage go for the non-turbo 4-cyl. CA18DE is a good engine. :D Pulsar power!

hoov100 08-15-2007 11:30 AM

i wanna build my own vg30det, this vg30et crap can kiss my ass, i want power!

Bleach 08-15-2007 12:27 PM

SOHC rules!!!! :D

hoov100 08-15-2007 02:59 PM

for economy, but without the aftermarket support your just kinda pissing into the wind..

Please show me something you can get for the DOHC that you can't get for the SOHC.

hoov100 08-15-2007 03:41 PM

12 more valves, VVT, more flow without porting the heads, higher RPM range without stressing the motor out, plus if you have adjustable cam gears it broadens the range for tuning..

WTF?!?!?! Did you not read what I asked?

NAME SOMETHING YOU CAN GET FOR THE DOHC THAT YOU CAN NOT GET FOR THE SOHC.

Adjustable cam gears are available for the SOHC motors as well.

hoov100 08-15-2007 04:46 PM

thats a brief list of what you cant get with SOHC, minus the cam gears..

That's a list of the differences between the motors. Thats what the motor doesn't have.

You said that without aftermarket support, you're pissing in the wind.

Well, I'm asking you what aftermarket support you are talking about.

So once again, what AFTERMARKET PARTS can you get for the DOHC motor that you can't get for the SOHC motor?

hoov100 08-15-2007 06:30 PM

all heads work the same, but the DOHC heads have been proven to be able to produce more HP and TQ. without as much modification as it would take a SOHC head to do..

And you still haven't answered the question. Are you retracting your original statement or are you just going to keep tap dancing around the question?

hoov100 08-15-2007 08:05 PM

im talking about the kind of aftermarket for the vg30de/tt heads vs. vg30e/t heads.

ill tap dance as long i want....:D

wow that is really alot of extra info,i figured THAT swap MIGHT work after new custom engine mounts, drive shaft, wires, ecu, and transmission to go along.
i was also wondering what other swaps can be put into the z31 engine bay? :075:

i must ask, why would you put the ca18 in the z31?? the easiest swap if you want more power is the vg30et. anything else is a bit harder. various RB series motors have been swapped into the z31. really, you can put anything you want in there, some have done V8s. what are your needs and budget?

jadotkd 08-16-2007 07:58 AM

have a z31 i bought for drifting but the weight is too front heavy so i was thinking if i dropped in a smaller or even lighter engine then maybe it can change my weight distribution

jadotkd 08-16-2007 07:59 AM

i heard some people have swapped the rx7 b13 into the z

Bleach 08-16-2007 08:13 AM

RX7 engine? Uhh... you need torque for drifting :D

You want your engine far back for drifting. I was going to suggest an RB25DET. That's a good turbo engine, not too expensive and actually easier to work on than a VG30. (although parts not quite as easy to get)
But for drifting only you might want to go with an SR20DET. The CA18DET is a bit too 'light duty' of an engine for that kind of stuff.

Also, LSD R200 for the Z31 or 280ZX is hard to find and very expensive. Look into it. That might be your first hangup unless you already have one. If you break it though, you'll be hard pressed to find replacements unless you just accept that each replacement will cost you ~$1000.

jadotkd 08-16-2007 12:30 PM

SR20 ? what else would i need besides the tranny and wires (that im obviously not very knowledable about)wouldnt i also have to modify the hood so i can make it fit?

custom motor mounts. custom exhaust piping. ecu. are you planning on doing this yourself?? the questions you are asking lead me to believe that you do not have the experience to pull this off. a Z is not a civic.

Bleach 08-16-2007 12:50 PM

seriously. You shouldn't need to ask what you need to make a complete engine. If you dont' know, then you're far from being able to drift. Drift cars break often. They need to be fixed and money dumpted into them. Hardly are they ever good for a daily driver.

Hood mods, probably not. The RB25DET fits in the Z31 so the SR20DET should fit fine with room for a chicken rotisserie .

hoov100 08-16-2007 12:52 PM

thats a sweet idea, a smoker in the engine bay of a z31 with an SR, hmmmm..

it'll cook off the red hot heat from the turbo exhaust housing. Hook up a gear reduced v-belt off the crank to spin the chicken! When you're all done drifting, just pop the hood and gather round for some good food. :048:
