new to the club
hey i am new to the club, and i have an 86 300 zx 5 speed, non turbo. I was have a couple questions about my car that i am hoping that some of you can answer for me. My car has the electric dash, and it doesnt work, none of the lights show up. I am hoping that you guys may know what is wrong with it, and can give me a step in the right direction. Also if you guys can give me any other sites, that may help me with parts that i need, that would greatly be appreciated. Thanks again, Kevin

Welcome to the club, about your dash, Zs are famous for this, The most common reason for the digital dash not working is due to faulty sodering joints in the power supply unit, located on the driver's side. Under the dash. Mounted to the center console. Its a silver box about 5" long.

About that dash......
It may not be the best idea....., But if you can't get that dash to work properly, go to a junkyard and get a used one. A friend of mine had to do this. One other thing you might try...., If you or someone you know has a voltmeter test the plug(s) on the back of the gauge face, there should be a 12v signal from one of the pins, BUT B4 you do so, please get a manual for your car, there may be a specific procedure for this, and if not followed could damage something...... The repair manual should only run you $15 @ the most

Great to see another new happy owner! Kev, you need to check out z31.com. Go through the FAQ very carefully and that will answer alot of the questions that you will most likely ask as a new owner of a Z31. As far as your dash is concerned, it is not that difficult of a fix. If you have any soldering skills at all you should do fine, if not, you can read all about it in the below link, and then take out the control unit yourself, go to a reasonably competent mechanic and pay them a little to resolder it for you, just make sure you know what you want them to do and explain it well.
