I recently brought my 88 300zx 2+2 in to the local Nissan dealership here to have them check on my fuel gauge and Cruise Control. My fuel gauge only works below a quarter tank and only the secondary gauge works. My cruise control light would come on but the wheel switches refused to work. After sitting in the waiting area for about 3 hours I was called out to my poor car.

I was told the cluster is just fine (thank god). It is the fuel sending unit in the tank that went bad. OK....fair enough. That's only gonna run me about 290 bucks to replace. Thats not ok.... The cruise they couldn't figure out. they tested the wiring, the switches, the vacuum lines, everything they could think of. So I went home, depressed (not really) at the inability for my car to use cruise.

Then, I decided to check out the forums and a few z31 sites I knew of. Low and behold...they talk of a deadman switch on the pedals. So i put my seat all the way back and crawl in upside down with a flashlight. Sure enough, there's the switches.... and no bumpers to push them in. $2.98 at Autozone later and my cruise lights were working again....but no cruise. Odd, you might say. Well, hitting the Set button on the wheel turned it on...but didn't lock in the speed. For those who might try to figure this out, I then, for the heck of it, hit set again doing about 45 on my way home. Lights on....No cruise. I then hit ACCEL to see if maybe the accelerator controls still worked.

HOLY YAKOWS! My cruise suddenly works. I ended up playing with it for an hour i think. So now I know for my car's cruise to work I must hit set then use the ACCEL button to actually set my speed. Thanks ZDriver.com. The search is my friend.

OH, and if anyone was a spare fuel sender they can part with let me know. I really don't want to spend near $300 on one.

that's just their install price. Buy the new sender from the dealership and install it yourself. VERY SIMPLE. Just have to pull up the rear carpet to access the unit.

Ya. But it's still over two hundred dollars for that blasted sender though.

Br glad you can even still buy the part, I can't even find a fuel level sender for my 87 dodge. If you are complaining about $200, then maybe cars just aren't for you.
