Re: Hot air when driving.
Same on my car. My A/C works, but without it on I get hot air from the vents. When I turn my A/C on, and accelerate, it gives out hot air.

I believe that should fix both problems, now however I think you need to have the A/C decompressed first, which that site does not tell you. Thats my two cents.

A/c should be decomp. by a dealer or mechanic as it is illegal (if you have freon) to discharge that stuff into the air.

you don't need to worry about the freon in the system. Just replace the vacuum lines. Start with all the ones in the engine bay. Then, if that doesn't solve it, you're going to have to replace the ones in the car next. And those aren't the fun ones.

AZ is right. I read up on this some more and found out that these are just vacuum lines. Also I was thinking why would freon be passed through a rubber hose. Just replace them, trace one down at a time. If you do have to replace the ones in the car, goto z31.com and archive 157 tells you more about those. Good reading material. I am going to replace mine Monday (If I am not too messed up from my wisdom teeth removal) and let you know what you need, how long it took, and the results. I may also take some pics.

Re: Hot air when driving.
I bought my '86 300ZX about a week ago and found the same problem. It's a quick and very cheap fix and you may even find that your A/C works.
At the front of engine bay, very close to the headlamp, there is a black box that has two vacuum lines (diam of about 1/8") going to it. These vacuum lines split and were not able to hold the vacuum. (I believe, through experience with my other vacuum ***** toy, that these vacuum lines operate actuator doors that open the vents for hot and cool air)
Go to your local Advance Auto and buy two "Vacuu-Tite" Extension connections for 1/8" to 5/32" and a foot of 5/32" vacuum line. Cut the hose where they split, wet the end, and twist it into the 1/8" side, twice. Then cut a couple inches of the 5/32" vacuum hose for each side and connect one side to the extension and the other to small valves that had split the older hoses.
I'll follow this thread and see, if I can help further.
Cheers!

Re: Hot air when driving.
Ok, well I replaced a lot of hoses, only problem is one that I could not get too. There are 3 in front by the left headlamp. I got 2 of those - One through the firewall and one behind the ERG valve? The one that did not go through the firewall had a white stripe, the one through the firewall had a red stripe. Now both of these were near the top of the black box by the headlamp (Yeah I know I don't know the names, its been a long day.) The blue one is near the bottom, but the guy who owned the car before me must of unhooked it. If anyone has a picture or can explain to me where to hook it up to - I would be greatful. Now, go across to the drivers side, there are a lot of hoses to replace. The boost sensor (I have a turbo, if that makes a diffrence.) has small hose hooked up to it, where it goes to a Y and splits. I have pics if you want them, just replace those hoses, I know one goes behind the throttle body, while you can also replace the one on the throttle body. Now normally my car idles rough till the temp gauge is in the middle, but I turned it on after I was done and it was partially cold, but idled fine. I had no hot air from the bottom vents, but I felt some from the top. It could be that blue striped wire, damn stupid wire. I will let you know tonight when I take it out when the engine is cold and see how it runs.

OK I just checked out the site from Zen Archer. Apparently the hose goes to the Plenum, but where do I hook it up too? My Haynes manuel does not even list the Plenum...

Re: Hot air when driving.
that one should go to the top of the plenum back by the firewall. there's a fitting on there which should have either 2 hose nozzles coming out of the fitting, or one nozzle coming out with a small chunk of vac hose on it, then a Y. (one of those goes to cruise actuator, the other is the hose with blue stripe that you're talking about). I think it was on my '85 that the fitting going into the plenum acutally had 2 nozzles sticking out of it (I like that kind better - something else for me to watch for at the junkyard....)

Re: Hot air when driving.
Well the good news is that I can start my car cold, and it does not idle rough, or even sluggish on acceleraction response - which is great. Also I have no hot air from the bottom vents. Now I looked for the vacuum hose hookup like you told me Spot, but I could not find it. I will check again tomorrow when I have more light. I am attaching a pic also. The red circle is for the hose through the firewall. The white circle is the second hose I replaced, but that damn blue circle I can not find the hookup for. I don't know, it just pisses me off that I can't find it. Well at least I do not have to wait for a couple of minutes before I can drive my car in the morning. Thanks again Spot, I will see if I can find it. Best 15 bucks I have spent so far on my car, and it actually started after I was done! (All of my other repairs ended up to some more difficult problems.)

Re: Hot air when driving.
I think I see your problem...
(looking at your pic) the nozzle coming off the back of the plenum has a hose going to the heater **** valve. that hose is supposed to have a Y in it (the Y has one larger and one smaller port on it), with one split (the larger one) going to the cruise control actuator, and the other (the small one) going to the canister up by the headlight (should go to the port on the bottom). the hose that is left should go to that heater **** valve (that's the silver thing between the 2 circles you drew on the image.
at lunchtime i'll sneak out and get a pic of mine for you if i have all the vac lines set up properly in the car i'm driving today. I'm in skeeter - she has minimal accessories since she was flooded last year. click here for pics (so you'll understand why she's so barely equipped...).

Re: Hot air when driving.
Thanks, I am just trying to follow this some more. When you say a Y, are you saying there should be a 4 way hookup for the hose? I already have a hose from the headlamp canister to goto the cruise control, is there another one that goes to it?
The attached pic is what I gathered from your post. I assume I need a 4way hose hookup, 3 large ones with one small one. The red line is from the plenum to the heater **** valve, so I would need to attach the blue hose to it, and attach an extra hose from that to the cruise control (Yellow line)? Damn, I bet if thats the case, I would have to find one of those 4 ways from a specialty store. Am I correct Spot? Thats what I gathered from your post, but let me know if I am mistaken.
Thanks, Robert

Re: Hot air when driving.
Bob I think a "Y" is just 3,
Ok, i was replacing my hoses yesterday and guess what i snaped the stuped plastic hose that goes from the plenum my boost gauge. alittle bit of eletric tape saved my ***.
Im kind confused with my setup, its really not like the pic you have. Can someone take a close up pic and color code the wires. In the pic you posted i have that hose going down to the can. About the Y i dont think i have that. Dont know if its needed.

On my car the yellow hose from the plenum goes to my boost gauge.

Re: Hot air when driving.
OK, I think I understand what you are talking about now Spot. (By the way, nice job on cleaning that car up. The engine looked a lot nicer.) Here is a pic from page 69 in my Haynes manual. Now this car and the one you have on your site Spot are non turbo's, not sure if there is a diffrence in the vacuum hoses for NA's and turbos. Now the white circle is the hookup to the plenum. I see how that has 2 hookups on there, one straight to the heater **** valve (yellow hose) while the other side splits up. I am assuming the red hose goes to the cruise control. (I already have one going to the cruise control from the headlamp canister.) The reason why I am assuming it goes to the cruise control is because its the larger of the two hoses. Now the blue hose should goto the headlamp canister. Now what sucks is that I have only one hookup that goes straight to the heater **** valve. I am totally baffled on how I am going to get them hooked up correctly. I guess when I have my car fixed for the stupid wiring, it wouldn't hurt to have them look at the hoses.

Re: Hot air when driving.
There is a difference but Spot has at least 3 of each so no matter. I think you may be overcomplicating this. Are you saying you have more hoses than ports or vice versa? It sounds like you're saying you have 2 hoses to hook up to the heater valve.

Re: Hot air when driving.
ok, the ones in the white circle - one should be slightly larger, that's the one that goes to the cruise control. the other one should go to the front of the engine to what you call the headlamp canister (the one up front). the other 2 on the headlamp canister - one goes to heater **** valve, the other thru the firewall.

Re: Hot air when driving.
hmmm.... what does the vacuum pump do?
I know this is a long shot, but I'm going to guess it creates a vacuum. I could be wrong though...
