really? since when? biggest RB series ive seen is 2.6L.. thats in the skyline TT.. I believe you are thinking of the RB20 that is in the 200ZR.
i believe you are trying to get the J-spec VG30ET found in the japaneese version of the 300ZX.

Re: Fairlady 300zx engine price?
the rb30det isn't a stock nissan engine, rather it's a conversion.

from what i've read, it can be done with the rb20det or the rb25det engines. You would have to find out what cars had those engines in order to acquire the dohc head. Most likely you would have to get one from overseas. (not sure if any US or Canadian nissan/infinity cars had either of those engines).

Ahhh Rowan Meakins' 'RB30DET' Cobra (I work with him every now & then - never knew he was a car nut until 18 months ago).
The RB motors come in the following flavours:
RB20E
RB20DE
RB20DET
RB25DE
RB25DET
RB26DETT
RB30E
RB30ET
The RB30 models were used in Australia ONLY - we needed the low-down that the RB20 engines couldn't provide (at the time there was no RB25).
All other models were Japan only (plus Australia got the R32 GT-R, & the UK got the 32, 33 & 34 GT-R's).
The RB20E was phased out at the end of the R33 Skyline & the RB20DET has evolved from the NICS version in the HR31 GTS Skylines (hey, it was early days) through to the ECCS version & then the NEO version in the R34.
The Z31 came out as:
200ZR - RB20DET)
200ZX - VG20DE(T)
300ZR - VG30DE
300ZX - VG30E(T)
In Japan, stroker kits are available to increase the RB25 & 26 engines' capacity from 2.7L -> 3L+.
see http://www.versadev.com/ben/misc for some photo's of RB's in action.
