Analog Gauge Probs
Hi. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to fix some of my gauges. Here's the problems I'm having:
~Gas gauge-the smaller one (0-1/8) works fine but the (0-F) gauge reaches empty after like 10 miles of driving for some reason.
~Oil Temp-Works sometimes, not often though.
~Oil pressure-Works when I start the car, and eventually gives up and rests on the end.
~Speedometer-Reaches the back side of the pin by the time I get to second gear. I don't think I'm going 145mph in 1st gear so I think that may have a problem.
If anyone can help me with one or more of these gauge problems, please respond to me. Thanks much!!

Re: Analog Gauge Probs
For your fuel gauge problem, clean the sending unit.http://zeeyalater.net/comprob1.htm#fuel%20unit shows how to clean it, also check http://z31.com. Same goes with the unit for your oil. For your spedometer, I have no idea.

Re: Analog Gauge Probs
for the first three, the sending units are probably bad. Very common. Read about this and others like it in the FAQs on http://z31.com as was pointed out earlier.
for the speedometer....
let me guess, you have an 84-86 with an analog dash. Have you noticed any fluids on your brake or gas pedal recently? If not, you will. The seals in the pinion gear on the transmission are shot. The transmission fluid is getting pumped into the speedometer cable and up and into your dash. The reader in the dash is getting dirty with this fluid. Couple things you need to do. And do them at the same time.
1) Buy the two new seals for the speedometer pinion gear. Only a few bucks each at Nissan.
2) Clean the old gunk out. And that means, clean it out of the speedometer cable, the dash cluster, and everywhere underneath.
Pull the speedometer out and let all the fluid drain out. Easiest thing is to pull the little metal cable out of the sleeve and let them drain seperately. Then, get the instrument cluster out and clean it.
Make sure you use new seals on the pinion gear, or you'll be doing this all again before too long.
Good luck.
