86 and 88 interchangeability
Hello to all of my fellow Z friends!:) I know someone who has a 86 2+2 manual and it is def a parts car. Now I have an 88 coupe. Real simple question here. Is all the glass interchangeable (I know the rear side windows aren't mainly pass. side door and windshield)? Also what I have is an auto (bleh) and the new one is a manual (hoorah!). I should be able to do the manual swap from all that right?
Sorry my mind is racing:paranoid: (pure excitement). Thanks ahead of time! |
No. Only the windshield is the same.
2+2 doors are longer and the hatch glass is shorter. You may need a coupe 5-spd driveshaft for your conversion. I have that piece plus I have a couple rear hatch and corner windows. (all for sale) |
How much for the driveshaft? The window I need is the pass side door. Previous owner scratched the glass pretty bad.
|
Driveshaft price could be anywhere from $5 to $500 depending on your source.
|
I was thinking $30
|
is it for an 87-89 NA 2 seater?

Yes the one I have for sale is from an 87 NA 2-seater 5-speed car. I sent you a private message about it.
...so you found a 1986 2+2 turbo car? if that car with the 5-speed is also a turbo car and has the T5 for the turbo engine then that changes everything. Please describe the cars better. The 2+2 300ZX did not come available with a factory turbo so if it truely is a turbo then the transmission could be either from the NA or turbo or maybe its an NA engine with a hokey turbo bolted on. Send pics. The BUM will know what it is. :) |
You asked for them so here they are.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ssGuy/86z1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ssGuy/86z2.jpg Now when I saw it at first I looked under the hood and saw what all of you see...the 3000. What actually tipped me off was the spoiler. Then as you see in the second picture it is a 2+2 and the front seats are (well, at least out of) a turbo. Now to me, when you look back at the engine that looks like a stock turbo. However, I don't know for sure...which is why I have you guys (and gals). |
You should look more closely at the engine. First, the 3000 plate doesn't say turbo. Second, the pipe right before the throttle body is plastic and is NOT connected to any turbo. And if you look more closely, you'll not find any turbo anywhere in the engine bay. And that's because the engine isn't a turbo. Also the injector cooling fan that's on the right side of the engine only came on the 86NA models in that location. And finally, the 15" NA wheels.
All 86 models came with a rear spoiler (in the US anyway) because of the third brake light that was added. The seats, are you sure those say turbo? I believe they say 300 across the top and ZX below. But it's hard to tell from the pictures. Regardless, that is not a turbo car, and that is not a turbo engine. |
Then what is that right below the distributer cap? (curious now)
|
Below the distributor cap is the engine. In front of it (red) is the timing belt cover. Next to it (yellow) is your air conditioning pump. Did you think the AC compressor was a supercharger?

Ok, I thought the timing belt cover was covering the turbo. I have never seen that on an engine...of course I have only worked on the 88's. I knew what the air conditioning pump was (and wasn't).
Thanks Bleach and Bum....sometimes I am just oblivious. |
