400+ hp? can it be done?
Ok I have a 1987 turbo ZX. I am getting ready to but an engine (or a junk car with a turbo engine in it) and then build it I want to achieve high HP and good torque... I have been going through my motorsport catalog and getting some Ideas.. Does anyone know why the upgrade turbo from motorsport requires use of an 84-86 exhaust manifold?
Other then that I am looking at the following upgrades to the engine I buy...
Forged pistons
performance head gasket
rising rate fuel pressure regulator
upgraded turbo
port/polish on heads
cams
intercooler
along with new seals
timing belt
water pump
am I missing anything in this list? and does anyone have an 87-89 Turbo long block or junker within a reasonable distance of Ohio? (no more then a couple hundred miles from Cincinnati)
YUP they only see a cloud of smoke....

400 hp is only a couple seconds away if you just through in some jp5 and crank the sucker to 10 grand! But if you want that kind of power for more than just a second or two, before your engine reduces itself to a molten slag, lots of prep work must be done. You have a good start, but forgot a few of the basics,
exhaust
intake
timing control or upgraded ecu (stock is only good to about 310 i think)
Injectors (only good to 300 hp)
boost controller (gonna need that)
some kind of bov for your upgraded turbo
if you put in new cams and are looking for high *****, make sure you replace the, rocker arms, springs & lash pads. I believe motor sport mentions this as well.
If you with 400 ***** you might also want to get your connecting rods shot peened or replaced with some good ones, I don't know if the stock ones can handle or not, but it might be worth it.
There are a few other cheap mods you can do, like 240 sx tb and maxima alternator and so on. You are just going to have to decide on your budget as to what all you do.
oh yeah, you might also want to replace the clutch, since you WOULD turn the stock one into dust (don't ask).

Re: 400+ hp? can it be done?
Sure it can easily be done. Takes some $$$$$ though
I'm just finishing mine now..
T3/T4 hybrid turbo, bottom end polished, balanced, shotpeened, nitrided crank. FULL porting, polishing and redesigned combustion chambers, larger throttle body, stock cams, (new lifters etc..) lightened flywheel, CFII clutch, two row front pully, portmatched coolant passages, polished water pump passages, boost controller, new guage, A/F ratio monitor, large intercooler, BOV, modified POV freeflow exhaust, ram air/modified air intake. Larger injectors, and modified ecu. High flow fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator..
and most likely a bunch of other parts that I forgot to mention.... hehehe
I'm hoping to get near the 400 mark.. not a major issue though.. Car will be stupid fast.. allready is with a near stock motor and 18psi of boost. 2800 odd lbs with me in it doesn't hurt either..hehe.
I'll let ya know how it turns out.. currently runs extreme low 13's in the 1/4
