replacing struts what kind?

I am replacing all four of the struts on my 300zx turbo because they are worn out. What are the cheapest ones that i can get that are not too horrible. Are stock struts reasonable to run if i am going to be messing around and drifting?

tokico HP's are not too expensive, and should be adequate if you are just messing around. tokico illuminas are 5 way adjustable, and also more sxpensive, but provide a stiffer ride if you want one. you may as well do your springs while your at it, being that it is duplicate maininence for the most part, but keep in mind if you lower the car, your rear camber will need to be corrected. also, just for reference, the fronts are strut cartridges, the rear are shocks. make sure you dont buy 4 strut cartridges, or 4 shocks, or you will not be happy.

if you're trying to drift and looking for cheap shocks, you're an idiot and not very good.

if you want cheap, Pep Boys sells Monroes that are cheap and work well enough. about 1/3 the cost of the Tokico blues.

If you want something good but not overly pricey, get the KYB Gas-Ajust. They are way better than factory... way better than Monroe. They won't have quite the "track" performance of the Tokico Blue's but on the street they will ride a lot better. They are the best balance of price/performance/ride quality out there. You should definetly replace the springs at the same time. The shock/struts job is controlling the spring... if the springs are weak (Which is a given on a car over 5 years old) the shocks/struts have to spend all of their time trying to keep the springs from oscilating and they won't help you very much. Also, if you are "Drifting" your car... you aren't going to be drifting very good with weak springs. You need a stiffer spring than stock for any kind of drift set up. Springs are cheap. If you can't afford to do it all now... wait until you can do it right. Save some money and go all out with the tokico Blue's and some good springs and you won't have to worry about it. If drifting is just a hobby and you use the car mostly as a daily driver then you're probably better off with the KYB's and a set of decent springs.

If you're going Tokiko, then you can probably get the matching Tokiko springs with them as a whole kit (At least I know that's true of the S130 cars). If not, you can't go wrong with the Eibachs.

They don't for the cheap shocks. They do for the better Illuminas. But those are 5 way adjustables.

You don't want Eibachs for drifting. Eibachs are a progressive spring great for regular street driving. You want the stiffest springs you can get. Which are STs.

If you really want to drift, you'll spend the thousand or so dollars on coil-overs. If not, you're only making it harder on yourself.

I forgot about the whole "Drifting" angle to this thread. Eibach certainly not the best choice for drifting...

and i also do not want any that lower the car becasue i read up at the top of this that you have to do something to the car to put springs that drop the ride a inch or so

thats the camber you are thinking of. lowering a z31 will result in quite a bit of negative camber in the rear wheels. this increases tire wear and reduces handling, especially on wet pavement.

I think you should stop posting and start reading. You are way out of your league in the "can I do this?" type questions.

As the saying goes, "get in, sit down, SHUT UP, and hang on."

In board terms, I suggest you read about 100 threads before asking any more uninformed questions.

there is a search function for this forum. i suggest you use it before you start asking a lot of questions that may have already been answered a few times before, and do a little research. then you wont have to deal with cranky old bastards like zbum so much. it will also help you be able to ask more precise questions, and therefore, get more precise answers.

This little verbal assault is aimed at someone other than me right?

I'm still trying to figure out how and where it went from trying to help out a newbie to going all sideways. There's a little gap in the thread somewhere that must have the missing link.
