Wire Harness Problems

I just got a sony CDX-GT510 and started to install it but the wire harnesses from the deck to the car don't match up. I've gone thru my chilton's wire diagrams and the wires from the radio and everything seems to fit but the harnesses are all messed up. I have an 86 (Z31) 300ZX (GLL I think, Amp under the seat). did they just send me the wrong harness and if so where can i get the correct ones? I already look under the Aftermarket Stereo Intallation page but it didnt help much.

Welcome to ZDriver!

Is the harness they gave you a "plug to plug" harness or do you need to hook up each wire to the other plug that matches the stock harness? Also, Chilton manuals suck, buy a Haynes.

its a plug to plug. but the connectors inside the plugs dont match up and they dont fit w/ one another. its the correct type of connector but the wrong end. (sorry for the non-electrical lingo, i hope that makes sense)

If your car is a GLL, there is an AMP under the passenger seat and the harness wont do you any good. It is a very simple amp bypass (then again, i do install car stereos for as my job). The speaker wires are all under the seat. Just run 4 sets of speaker wire down there and pop the speakers with a 12v batt to see which one is which. For power ground and Acc, just test the rest of the wires off the existing radio harness, then tag them. you should be good after that.

Little tip, Some people try doing the amp bypass without taking out the seat (and its possible) but it will be less of a headache if you just undo the 4 bolts and take it out, it gives you lots of room to work.

the harness I bought worked perfectly. it came with two seperate pieces. one attached behind the stereo. the other attached to the stock harness under the seat.

the seat and radio have been out of the car for a while... its a project car and both seats were all torn up, so i ditched the pass. seat and got a cover for the driver seat untill i get some new ones. (any suggestions?) I've looked around the amp and i think I understand where everything goes. also AZ-ZBum, where did you get your harness from? its quite possible i was sent the wrong ones.
