New Hatch Area Carpet

Just replaced the carpet in the rear hatch area on the 87 Turbo. The previous owner had a large speaker box and between that squishing the carpet and years of sun, the old carpet was junk. Bought new carpet through Stock Interiors. It's the extra plush exact replacement in Lapis Blue with the mass back. The color isn't exactly right, it is a little too blue-green, needs to be a little more navy in color. I got the mass backing so that it would lay flatter and deaden sound better. I had to cut the mass back off of the first 8" so that I could attach the carpet to the storage area lid. The new carpet is still too thick to use the original push fasteners, so I had to use longer ones. Otherwise I really like the finished project.

That reminds me....I need a new cargo area carpet for my '86 coupe. Anyone know where to get one that's made to fit with the slots for the T-Top straps?
Thanks

Had to cut my own holes for the straps with the carpet set I got. Wasn't too difficult, I used the old carpet for a pattern. Also had to drill/cut the holes for the push nuts on the front and the holes for the railing/handle. The biggest problem was that I got the high quality mass backing on the carpet and that made it too thick in some areas. Stripping the mass backing from the effected areas was tougher than cutting and drilling the holes. It is plush and has quieted the interior down from road noise significantly.

Defender405,

If you were to do it all over again would you go with the mass backing? I'm really debating and going back and forth with this. Blahhh

Khass,
I probably wouldn't get the mass backing again and I would ask them to send the color samples. The carpet thickness without the mass backing was still pretty good on the premium carpet and I don't feel like I needed the mass to get the sound deadening I was looking for. I rolled the dice on the color match and I missed pretty bad within the blue spectrum. Unless you just need black or are in a huge hurry have them send the color samples, they offered and I said no. Cutting the holes for the push pins and the chrome cargo rail as well as the slots for the T-top hold down straps wasn't a big deal and would have been nothing without the mass backing. The premium carpet is nice and plush and 100% improves the look, way worth the money, but with a better color match and no mass backing I would have been somewhat happier. Hope this helps you decide.

Thanks Defender it def. does help me decide with you being the 2nd person saying not to get the mass backing. I'm going to get a hold of them tomorrow to get the samples like you suggested. Thanks again.
