A friend's dad once gave him some pretty good advice about selecting a car to keep: there are three major considerations, body, interior and engine. If only one of the three is messed up, you can probably do okay by fixing what's wrong and moving on. If two out of the three are messed up, you're fighting a losing battle. Of course, if all three areas are messed up, you are probably a multi-zillionaire who has a fetish for restoring automobiles.
Sounds like you have a two out of three problem. I'd look for another vehicle that has less rust and a great engine and then buy the new carbon-fiber looking accessories!
