If everything is not rusted and badly discolored, then this should help. GUNK makes an engine cleaner that works really well. It usually only takes one can. You will spray down the engine with this stuff and let it sit for a little while then pressure wash the engine. I have seen it and it does work wonders. Also, a lot of carwashes now will clean your engine for you, but who wants to spend money on something that easy to do yourself?

There's a big risk to doing this. There are lots of electronic components and electrical connections in there. Water doesn't work well with either of those items. If you do decide to do that, you'll want to dry it out also; such as using compressed air. You don't want to leave those components wet. I have done it without any problems, but I have seen it cause major problems. It's your car, so it's your call.
