with the new radatior.. i couldnt put the shrout back on... is that bad? or do really need it?

VenomousZX 05-09-2006 06:18 AM

I'd say find a way to put it back on, when my Rad finally died I left the fan shroud off & the car seemed to run a little hoter than I'd like put it back on but be careful of the upper hose, you may have to remove it to re-instal the fan shroud

NismoPick 05-09-2006 07:36 AM

It's easiest to put the shroud back on BEFORE hooking up the radiator hoses. You can still do it, but it's gunna take some skill. Or just pull the hoses back off & re-install. You should put it back in, as it helps cool.

BTW... That engine needs to be cleaned! :D

chinesekid 05-09-2006 11:10 AM

yea... engin has to be clean really bad... haha, alrite.. i'll try to put back the shrout.. i just didnt know if it was bad if i didnt put it...

silvrhand 05-09-2006 11:21 AM

YES! Put your shroud back on it affects the fan's ability to flow air through the radiator which is important when in traffic or slow moving. Also the radiator looks like it's already got rust on it??

Looks to be a remanufactured rad w/ painted fins.... I believe the fins are copper / tin ???

jfairladyz 05-09-2006 06:28 PM

without the shroud the fan wont pull air through the radiator. It will pull it from around the fan blades instead as there is less resistance that way. The shroud is designed so that the air moved by the fan HAS to come through the radiator. It wont make much difference on the highway (if at all), but after you've been driving and you come to a stop and try to idle for any length of time your temps will start to rise as the coolant continues to heat but the heat isn't being dissipated.

chinesekid 05-09-2006 10:41 PM

oh.. alrite cool.. imma put it back on

but yea.. the radatior is copper or tin...

WildmaN 05-10-2006 03:31 AM

I disagree with the shroud not being useful on the highway. When I didn't have my shroud on my '81. He would be fine, until I jumped on the freeway. And then all of a sudden within a few minutes, my temp gauge would quickly start sweeping over. It was annoying, but as soon as I found a shroud, and put it on. My Z didn't overheat as much. Of course I also had to get a brass thermostat, and that helped out a lot. Not trying to step on anybody, but the city driving didn't bother my Z at all without a shroud. But like I said, as soon as I jumped on the freeway within a few minutes, well you get the picture.

jfairladyz 05-10-2006 09:01 AM

thats strange wildman cause the ONLY point of the shroud is to help the fan direct air through the radiator. Thats it. The only time the fan is used is while at a stop or low speeds. On the highway your car doesn't rely on the fan for cooling, so in essense the shroud does nothing for cooling on the highway. So it's strange that it made a difference in your case.

Those are long studs for the fan pulley, is that normal? I don't recall my zxt having them that long.

jfairladyz 05-10-2006 09:40 AM

those do look really long.

chinesekid 05-10-2006 11:15 AM

yea.. those were the wrong one.. the pump came with 4 long one's and 4 short ones.... and once i got it on and try to put the fan assemably on.. it couldnt go in.. so i changed it to the short one

n00blar 05-10-2006 07:18 PM

Heh, I was gonna say the same. I did exactly what you did the first week of owning my ZX...ahh the memories.
