Trannys that fit
Hi, I'm sure this has been covered in a previous topic, but my searches came up with nothing. I was wondering if there are any other transmissions that fit into a turbo 280zx. Say a tranny from a Z31. I am working on building my '81 280 with a swaped turbo engine and now it is time to find a manual transmission. Thanks in advance.
Sdatsun.

Why not use the Borg Warner T5 that came in the 1982-83 280ZX turbo? Its strong enough to stand up to 300+ horse and is a fairly simple install into the NA chassis. You just need to find the transmission crossmember, driveshaft, differential flange, oh and the T5. I haven't heard of anyone trying to install a tranny from the Z31. You might check Hybridz.org for more input on alternate transmissions, but the easy proven transmission is the T5.
Best of luck!

well the body of the tranny is the same, but the input and output shafts are different and the gearing is different. And as John said the short throw shifters made for the Mustang trannys will work.

Here is what I did to one of my 240z,s. It was a 4 speed so I had a wrecked 77 Datsun pickup and pulled the tranny it required a little work but it was well worht it. I had great off the line pull and an awesome top end compared to any of the other 12 Z,s I haved owned since. Unfortunately I did this mod back in 1984 and dont remember the exact pecifics to the install. I do knowI did it in an afternoon, with a buddy.

Thanks for the info and yes, I meant small block Chevy. I figured the trany to SBC match wouldn't be that easy, but had to ask anyway. Also, it seems the ZX is not a good platform for the SBC, but its what I have. Even a Turbo L28 swap is a problem because of the power steering box.
I might be stuck with just a stocker. Wish I'd bought a Z instead, but I had no prior experience with Z-cars and anyway the early ones are becoming few and far between. Actually, I don't see too many ZXs anymore.

Runninonempty,
If the steering box is in the way, try finding an older ZX like a 1979 or 1980 base model. They had manual steering racks, you would need the engine cross member to go with it though. This would ease your pain for installing a turbo or V8.

Gary,
That's a good idea, I'd prefer manual steering anyway, maybe save a few pounds. I'll start checking out the junk yards. Now that I've got it running good and passed Calif. smog, its time to focus on performance and I don't believe an L28 N/A will get it.
