Super rich mix
My engine is running absurdly rich. My car is federal and was made in january of 1980 and has no O2 sensor. It has been suggested i replace the AFM (A31-618 420) it has also been suggested i replace the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing. Does anyone have any idea of which is the more likely culprit?

The AFM is the most likely culprit. It may not need to be replaced though. There is a sticky about rebuilding your AFM in the tech section. There are also many recent threads about this same symptom. There is a great "search" function on here as well. Good Luck!

Both are very likely culprits. I'm not too familiar with the wiring of the 80 cars but I thought the temp sensor was on the side of the cylinder head. The ones in the thermostat housing are neccessarily the part you're looking for. Look on the passenger side of the cylinder head near the firewall and you should see a a sensor with connector on it resembling the connectors used on the fuel injectors. Check the connection there for corrosion and also check the AFM connector for corrosion. The temp sens. can easily get corroded due to the heater hoses running near it.
