I had the head of my 81' 280zx cleaned and the mating surface machined. During this I also had two studs removed and the holes re-threaded because they had been broken off. The picture shows the newly threaded holes. I need to find new studs so I can put things back together. I checked with Victoria British and they have a couple stud kits, head stud kit, rod bolt kit and main stud kit. Does anyone have experience with this, knowing which kit is the correct one or if these are for that or not? Any other sources to look through? All comments are welcome.

 

I would suggest using ARP studs as the original Nissan studs were only a grade 7 or 8 and not up to par with the heat that came from the engine. (I have one stud broken towards the #1 cylinder) A quick search through Google should help you find the cheapest prices on the studs.

thanks for the source. after checking their site it seems that what i am looking for are header studs, as they are the studs that will hold the intake manifold to the cylinder head.

To go a cheaper route you could probably find some all-thread and cut pieces to length. Just a suggestion.

 

you can buy the heat treated studs at almost anyauto parts store.. i bought mine from napa auto parts.. jsut bring them one of your origionals and have them match it up for you..

 

while taking the head off i found that they had broken off so there arent any to match up to. my main concern is to make sure that i am looking for the right part. after looking at the ARP site i believe that it is the header studs. i am gonig to call and see if they can help/verify that this is correct. there is a napa close to my house, i will check there also.

Header studs or exhaust manifold studs sounds correct.
A couple of those double as holding the intake manifold to the head as well. Those ones use a really thick washer under the nut that goes over part of the intake and exhaust manifold. The stud should be the same though. You might as well replace them all.

 

you are correct in that some of the studs/bolts hold both the exhaust and intake manifold. I stated incorrectly in regards to the re-threaded holes, these are for the exhaust manifold only. If I recall properly the "inside" ones (that hold both and are in the middle section of the head) are bolts, at least on mine.

At least for the rear stud (back end of the head near the fire wall) there is a washer that is about 3/8" thick. I only found this after looking at cars at a wrecking yard. There was another ZX that the stud was broken off also, which caused me to wonder if it was supposed to be there at all. From other replies it seems that this is a normal occurrence.
