Talking Stock upgrade questions? Please help.

Ok. I have a stock 82' 280zxt. The only upgrades I have is a 3" exhaust (done before I purchased the car), and k&n air filter. I have been doing some reading and have found that the stock injectors can handle about 10psi of boost. I want to increase my boost to about 9.5psi so that I dont have to replace my injectors just yet. So to start, from what ive read i can get a manual boost controller and set it to such. I would also need to adjust my pop off valve to sustain the increased boost which i have learned can be done by adding a few washers above the spring inside. From what I gather, the internal components of the engine can sustain that amout of boost so there is no need for replacement of any of those. The only other thing that I should need is an after market boost guage that exceeds that amount right? Is there anything else that i must do to handle the increase in boost? Also if i were to add a small intercooler from ebay to the mix is there anything I should know or consider. Oh, and one last thing. Is there any reason to add a blow off valve with this modification? Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thank you!

Wow, your probably the first person who actually knows how the search, congradulations. As far as everything you said, your dead on. its definately safe to be running 10 psi. THe stock injectors can handle more then 10psi but I always like to be safe. Whats holding you back at that point is not having an intercooler. All you will need like you said is bost controller, boost gauge and plug or adjust the pop off valve.

As for an intercooler. Iv seen a lot of people using those ebay brand intercoolers and have really good luck, just ask around before you buy one. And you will NOT need a blow off valve, but once you install the intercooler then you DO need one. Once you get an intercooler you can run about 12 psi. At that point to get any more power out of it you will have to run some kind of aftermarket engine management system, Im using Megasquirt and thats really popular.

And the stock internals can handle way more power then the stock T3 turbo can even make, so I wouldnt worry.

Good Luck
Rob

I think KTM pretty much nailed this one. Those cheap-o ebay intercooler should be fine for low boost applications. The junkyard is another option for an OEM quality intercooler.

A BOV is definitely not needed at 9-10 psi. You can use one if you want, but not needed.

And the internals are definitely the least of your concerns as long as everything is in good shape to begin with.

u can block off the POV with a Plug from a hard ware store... u can raise the boost to 8psi thats what i recomand i haev a 1982 280zxt 5 speed i have raised psi to 7 8 9 10 11 ,12, 14, and 20 psi..on the stock turbo ... why 20 ? becuasei wanted to see if the stock turbo could take it.. in fact it did ! just not for a long long time.. i would tell u also to buy

1 NGk iridum sprak plugs <-- there kinda expensive but there the best..
2 degut cat or make a test pipe..
3 custom make your own cold air intake.. get ride of the old air box...
4 ADJ fuel pressrue regulator..
5. walbro after market fuel pump really helps out alot !
6.t/3t4 hybrid turbo charger... smile cuz u know u can turn up the boost and not leak !
7 is yours is a 5 speed... upgrade to a stage 1 , 2 or 3 cltuch and light flywheel...
8.. VLSD diff. ask nismopick about this upgrade.....

I gotta say that trying 20 psi is just foolish. Of course the turbo can handle it. The engine and fuel system is another story. You're lucky you didnt put a hole through a piston at 20 psi.

Iridium plugs are a complete waste of money in an application like this. At 10 psi the stock NGK spark plugs are not hindering performance AT ALL. So why spend more on EACH plug than it would cost you for a set of six OEM? Mess with the gap before you spend more on sparkplugs then I did on an entire parts car

Hey Nismo619... forget these guys!

Go ahead and crank your boost to 20psi and then go do one your famous reverse to first burnouts. It'll blow all the carbon deposits out of your engine.

They are called "DrifZ" 515's 18x7...

And they are NOT off a pucking Honduh!

The also WILL NOT FIT without the right adaptors.

Rod.

P.S.

The day I call Nismo619 "Mr." anything is the day I slit my wrists with rusty razor blades and lie down in a nice warm bath.
