Stereo Installs

Ok... Not asking "How to", More like "Where?"

I want to bypass the 4" in the dash and install some good 6.5" speakers...but where? I have power windows, no space in the door. Can't do it on the kick plates...there's a fuse box in the way on the passenger side.

I already cutout and installed some 6x9s behind the seat in the stock position, and they work really good. Even get a little massage when I turn it up.

Then, I'd like to throw an amp (nothing crazy, just want to push those 6x9s a bit more than the JVC deck is capable of) in there somewhere...but again, where?

I use my little cargo boxes for "this and that", doesn't seem to be enough room or air circulation under the seat...

I'm not looking to bump the neighborhood. I just want a good, clean and balanced sound. To me, a sub in a ZX is WAY overkill. The car isn't big enough to warrant one. Oh, and I am an audio guy (not car audio, mind you, but live music and studio stuff) so you're not going to throw me off with frequency response, amps, ohms... you get the idea. So throw your ideas or actual installs my way.

I've thought about custom making one of these:

Motorsport! Speaker Panels - The Z Store, Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts

So that I don't have to pay the outrageous monies. Not that it's not quality for the price they have.

I haven't had a running Z long enough to figure out where to place an amplifier, they never really expected us to want more out of our systems, eh?

How big of an amplifier are you talking, since you're not looking to have a sub, just some added power to your speakers?

Lots of people have done wild stereo setups in the 280zx. Heat Rave R is the first one that comes to mind. Search his posts... I know he has posted pics. I saw his car at the MSA show. A wee bit flashy, but lots of goodies packed in.

Just enough to power my speakers. My 6x9's are 250w each, add a pair of 6.5"... 750? I'm not 100% sure.

I'll look at those posts... sounds interesting.

Here's a couple of picks of my rear 6 x 9 speakers and sub.

I copied the MSA box, but made it out of 3/4" particle board instead of 3/8" like MSA. The subs are 2 self powered 5 x 7's with a 150 watt amp. I have 2 4.5's behind the seats and a 600 watt amp. It killed the 50 amp alternator in about 20 mins. I upgraded to a 100 amp GM one wire.

They're bigger than the 5.25s I have, I think they may be closer to 6?

I bought some 5.25s thinking they were that size, I can't remember where I saw that, beh, at least I have some brand new Kenwood 5.25s laying around now, custom rear incoming!

I measured the hole and it's barely even 5.5, do 6-1/2s go in there?

5 1/4" are stock but 6 1/2" fit fine - just need to drill new holes for mounting

I have a pair of 6x9's jusrt behind the seats in my coupe. It also has a 12" sub built into the rear passenger panel (the one that hides the spare tire), and still allows me to have a spare! My amp is going to be moved, but currently is in the foam under the deck carpet. Yes, I cut out a square for it, and yes, I do regret it. It's going to be moved to behind the panel that had the cargo box in it (opposite of the spare tire). It all works pretty awesome for me!
