some pics of the top end

did a valve cover gasket in a effor to keep the car from dieing comming to a stop due to a possible leat in the gasket and i figured i would take some pics.

pretty clean considering but then again i did only roll over 86000 miles the other day, i need to change the oil too.

whats the marking on the cam mean and any significance of the red stripe on it?

Yay! You've mastered removing the valve cover!

The paint is usually for DOHC's so you can tell which cam is intake, and which is exhaust. In this case, it may be a reference marker, or another way to identify the cam (aside from the huge id stamp)?

well i do know some times different colors are for different lift and durration but then again you think the huge id stamp would be for that aswell

stock cam unless its been re-ground. changing the valve cover gasket has absolutly nothing to do with how the car runs btw.

well if there was a big enough leak it would have the same effect as taking the oil cap off while its running. since i have changed it it doesent seem to want to die as easily when i come to a stop any more and its worse when its colder out and its been quite a bit colder lately.

maybe the red paint is covering up the JB weld used to put the cam back together after it snapped in two.

Was it leaking oil like crazy? Indeed... check all the vacuum hoses, cold start valve, and air regulator.

i've never seen taking the oil cap off make a difference in how it runs. does it usually? actually, embarrassing story.... i drove all the way to town in my midget with the cap off, and couldn't tell a difference.

generally if you can take the oil cap off and it makes no difference it's an indication of vacuum leaks. Usually if you have no vacuum leaks, then you take the cap off now it's like opening up a huge vacuum leak.
