shifter shaft O ring leaking

shifter shaft O ring leaking
Anyone have a way to remove the shifter shaft from the rear of the housing? There is a lever at the front that has a tapered shaft held on with a nut and washers. This tapered shaft must be removed for the shifter shaft to be pulled from the back of the housing.
